This question has occurred to me, but I had never researched it, or asked about on F&D. I don't know why. The recipe for Harissa, includes Coriander. I know that Coriander is the seed, and Cilantro is the leaf, from the same plant. I am among those who cannot handle Cilantro. For many of us, one might just as well add one's soap-of-choice to a dish. (In a word: "ICK!") According to Rachael Ray, there is a big difference in the flavors ... and, even the dried version of Cilantro is milder than the fresh leaf. I absolutely LOVE cilantro. From what I understand, it's an enzyme thing where some people like it and others can't tolerate it - that soap taste you mentioned. I'm not as familiar with coriander, it's just not something we use a lot of in our house.
As for cilantro itself, gotta go fresh every time. Fresh herbs bring dishes to life. We try our best to grow them every year and we've had great luck with basil and mint year over year. But basically everything I make contains some combo of fresh cilantro, parsley, scallion and/or mint. The more the merrier.

I've also heard that the soap-like taste will, eventually, moderate (if not disappear), with continued use. However, I'm not willing to eat that much soap. I am going to try some recipes with Coriander. There's no point in avoiding something that I very well might enjoy. (Note: For a fun, and funny website, check out Ihatecilantro.com.)
