This illustrates the difference in temperament between Miko and Katsura. Miko was playing with the scratching post when it fell over. She responded by vigorously attacking it. Katsura would have run for the rafters. LOL, my cat would respond by meowing at me to pick it back up for her AND NOW.

Today Katsura supervised Catman as he did Catwoman's laundry. Shortly after this picture was taken, she fell asleep. Supervising takes a lot out of a poor kitty. Miko will have an adventure this weekend when she visits Catwoman. If the visit goes well, she may become part of Catwoman's occupation therapy routine.

Mine have to watch things be folded and hung properly, and it always requires some extra cat food or treat. I'll bet Miko does wonderfully while visiting Catwoman, and it will be just what the doctor ordered!

Miko's Saturday AdventureAs for Katsura, she has been having great fun rummaging through the Bag of Unwanted Toys Catman brought down to her room. Oddly, one of the first toys Katsura fished out was Evil Mouse, one of Xander's favorite toys that disappeared under mysterious circumstances some years ago. Xander had great fun with Evil Mouse, throwing it down the stairs, chasing after it and carrying the toy back upstairs, maowing all the way. A cat's maowing, of course, sounds much different when he's got his mouth full of Evil Mouse. Then one day, Evil Mouse was gone without a trace. For months afterwards, when Xander was playing half-heartedly with some other toy, Catman would say to Catwoman (or she would say to him), "Whatever happened to Evil Mouse?" And they would shrug because its fate was unknown. So having Katsura find Evil Mouse in the Bag of Unwanted Toys was quite a surprise. And Katsura seems to love playing with Evil Mouse just as much as Xander did. Then again, she loves playing with all the toys, and she takes great delight in ripping the less well-made toys to shreds. Several toys have transitioned from Unwanted to Unrecognizable since Katsura has been here. At least they died happy, assuming, of course, that no cat toy is truly happy until it's been ripped to shreds by a determined cat.

This evening Katsura made her second venture towards the world of the upstairs. Last night she only made it as far as the landing where the lower stairs and upper stairs meet, but tonight she made it all the way to the top. With encouragement from Catman, she came upstairs twice, and then he left her to her own devices while he brushed his teeth and took his insulin. When he was done with this, he glanced over at the stairs and saw Katsura peeking through the slats at this new world. She turned and walked slowly down the stairs as if to demonstrate that she really, really was not in the least bit intimidated by the newness she faced.
While Katsura explored, Miko chilled out in the bedroom. She was a good sport about the whole thing, even going into the bedroom on her own power when Catman asked her to.
Miko also seems to be looking forward to her next visit with Catwoman next weekend. Each day this week when Catman is ready to leave in the morning, Miko has gone to her carrier and called out to Catman. Apparently she thinks he's forgetting something. Too bad Catwoman has a fairly busy schedule with therapy and whatnot during the week, or Miko could come along every day. And Catman has overheard staff discussing changing shifts so they can be there when Miko makes her visit next weekend.

Katsura is upstairs now cautiously exploring. She seems fascinated with the top stair. And with all the going up and down the stairs, she is certainly getting her exercise. Overall, she seems relaxed and curious. Miko is in the bedroom playing with another Bag of Unwanted Toys. There seems to be a lot of those bags in the Cat household. Oddly enough, the mystery of what became of Mr. Hedgehog, another one of Xander's toys has been solved. When he disappeared all those years ago (back when Cassie still ruled the house), he somehow found his way into this particular bag. Miko thinks he is fun to play with. Sadly, Miko will not be able to visit Catwoman tomorrow. Catwoman hasn't been feeling well the past couple days, and there's some egg hunting event at the facility in the morning when Miko would be there. Even if the children are all well-behaved, that's a lot of extra noise that even a brave cat like Miko would find unnerving. Maybe Sunday.

Today Miko and Katsura met face-to-face. Catman sat on the top stair and invited Katsura to come up. Miko growled and hissed. Katsura hissed once but afterwards she just purred. Mostly they both just sniffed the air and looked at each other. After a while, Miko decided to go to the bed room and take a nap. Katsura continued to explore the upstairs. She's adapting rather quickly, but she still retreats downstairs when something unexpected happens.

This morning Catwoman was feeling much better, so Miko was able to go over for a visit. She didn't much care for all Catwoman's coughing, but otherwise, she had a good visit. She even greeted some of the folks who came in to check on Catwoman and whatnot. This afternoon, Katsura came out for another exploration of the upstairs. Miko, as expected, was not pleased with this and hissed a bit. Eventually she sprawled out on the top platform of the cat tree while Katsura explored at her leisure. Katsura even played a bit with the scratching post while Miko watched feigning disinterest. After a while, Miko decided she wanted to lie on top of the cable box, which probably isn't good for the cable box, but it makes her happy. She had to come close to Katsura to reach her goal, so she gave Katsura a good hissing, and Katsura wisely backed off. After Miko settled onto the cable box, Katsura thought her tail was worth checking out. Miko decided to ignore this attention. Katsura then checked out the cat tree and settled down on the footstool for a nap. And of course, a quick test of the cat tree uprights with her claws.

And then Katsura decided decided to play with Miko's tail. Miko was not amused but only managed a half-hearted hiss before going back to sleep. Katsura decided to follow suit.

It's been a quiet week for Miko and Katsura what with Catman being under the weather due to that cough/cold thing he caught while visiting Catwoman at the skilled care center. A couple days, Catman did little more than clean the litter boxes and provide food and water.
Miko had some fun playing nurse to Catman, giving him regular purr treatments. Unfortunately, one of Catman's coughing spells usually put a premature end to those treatments. Poor Katsura had to spend most of her time alone destroying more of her toys. She's become quite the expert at that.
Yesterday and today, Catman has felt alert enough to let Katsura out to interact with Miko. Miko still does not care for this new interloper and does her best to ignore Katsura's overtures. Today while Miko had a nice, long bath while lounging in Catwoman's chair, Katsura watched intently while perched on the folding chair next to Catwoman's chair which was originally set in place so Catwoman's visiting PTs would have a place to sit and somehow never got put away. Miko did hiss a bit when Katsura sniffed her tail, but otherwise, it had all the excitement of watching Andy Warhol's Empire, just not lasting quite as long.
For her part, Katsura seems determined to show Miko she's not a threat to her status, and Miko does seem to be getting used to Katsura.

Miko has done well adapting to her weekly weekend trips to visit Catwoman. Today she even let Catwoman give her all her treats, though she did save one and pretend to discover it an hour later. She seems to like meeting new people and runs right up to care techs and other residents when they drop by the room during her visits. She even let one care tech pick her up for a couple minutes. And Catwoman enjoys her visits immensely. Katsura continues to develop confidence in her world. She's even started to follow Catman out to the sink when he freshens the water in her bowl each morning. Sometimes as a joke she'll bound away when Catman starts to approach her, stopping to look back and wait for Catman to catch up with her. It's as if she's reminding Catman of how frightened she used to be. And she really likes her adventures in the upstairs. Miko still does not like Katsura and makes sure her opinion is heard. If Katsura approaches too closely, Miko hisses. So far she does not show overt signs of aggression, and like as not would just ignore Katsura if she didn't insist on following her around. Eventually, the novelty of Miko will wear off, and Katsura will lose interest. In the meantime, Catman keeps a close eye on the girls when Katsura is out and about.
