What are some of your favorite CLEVER CAPER MOVIES--Something like Oceans Eleven (1960) where a bunch (or a few) people carefully plan a big heist. These could be capers done anywhere in the world and usual involve a big payoff. They might even be Westerns.... The post that made me think of this subject was when someone did a thread on The Killing (1956), which to me, fits this category perfectly. Here's one to start with (images welcome):

Everyone is going to mention the great caper films
Here’s one I’ve only seen on tv Oerfect Gentlemen. It stars Lauren Bacall, Ruth Gordon, Sandy Dennis and Lisa Pelkian as women who meet while visiting their husbands in federal prison. They decide The husbands have lived on their generosity long enough. 9ne has a big stash from his crimes and the ladies decide to take it. Bacall was marvelous as The ringleader, and should have made more films with Ruth Gordon. The script was very sharp and it was very well made. I wish they would put this on dvd.

If you actually want it on dvd I'd vouch for this supplier modcinema
Would THOMAS CROWN AFFAIR count - saw the original a week or so back and thought it held up well.
POOL OF LONDON is a good Brit caper variant as is THE GOOD DIE YOUNG (the RESERVOIR DOGS of 1954)
THE MAN FROM RIO and Chabrol's atypically sunny - and gorgeous - THE ROAD TO CORINTHE are good Euro versions
Lesser caper movies from same era as THOMAS CROWN include JACK OF DIAMONDS, GRAND SLAM, KALEIDESCOPE The opening scenes of DePalma's FEMME FATALE (lesbian toilet sex during caper) add a new spin to it.....
There is a great "long con" scam in THE GRIFTERS
JEWEL ROBBERY?

The late ‘50s through the ‘60s were filled with them. Here are a few: The Badlanders / Delmer Davis (1958). A western caper film. It is often described as a loose remake of “The Asphalt Jungle.” Alan Ladd, Ernest Borgnine, Katy Jurado. How To Steal A Million / William Wyler (1966). Megawatt star power in this lighthearted heist starring Audrey Hepburn and Peter O’Toole. Ad Ogni Costo (Grand Slam) / Giuliano Montaldo (1967). Edward G. Robinson and Janet Leigh are in the cast for American audiences. Jack Of Diamonds / Don Taylor. (1967). The opening scene is George Hamilton as a cat burglar scaling a high-rise to steal jewelry from Zsa Zsa Gabor, playing herself. How ‘60s is that?

Perfect Friday 1970, a clever little British gem, caper wise. The Lavender Hill Mob 1951, hiding stolen gold in Eiffel Tower miniatures, it could have worked if it wasn't for a British school girl trip...

Not necessarily clever but I always liked it for its sheer lunacy. Assault on a Queen (1966) starring Frank Sinatra.

I think this at least "sort of" counts as a caper film. Terrific film whatever it counts as !

Not yet a classic, since it was just released to Netflix on Friday, but Triple Frontier (2019) was a rolicking fun heist/caper movie, with plenty of twists. Small Time Crooks (2000) is one of Woody Allen's best comedies, in my opinion, and a fun heist/caper flick! Small Time Crooks was either a homage or a remake of Larceny, Inc. (1942), not sure which. This movie is so excellent and seemingly overlooked.

^^ interesting collection there Lebowskidoo 🦞 " Not yet a classic, since it was just released to Netflix on Friday, but Triple Frontier (2019) was a rolicking fun heist/caper movie, with plenty of twists." If she who must not be named is aware of it, there will be a thread about TRIPLE FRONTIER on the CLASSIC FILMS board any day now.
