Having just watched the 2012 version of Anna Karenina, it got me thinking of films which feature a dancing scene set at a ball of some description (be they masquerade balls or other. Typically, it seems to be the scene in a movie where they go 'all out' - the dance choreography, the set, the costumes, the music. I'm always impressed by the effort put into these sorts of scenes and find that a lot of the time they can be the stand-out scene in a film. So, which ones stand out in your mind?

The Duchess of Richmond's Ball on the eve of the Battle of Waterloo is one of the most famous dances in history. As far as I know there is no good home video edition of Waterloo with Christopher Plummer and Rod Steiger.

Okay, so it's only the Stardust Ballroom ("It's loaded with tomatoes"), the clientele aren't in formal dress (although compared to today's standards, they're pretty dressed-up), and the film is black-and-white and relatively low-budget, but the most beautiful moment of this type, IMO, is the scene of Marty asking Clara to dance in Marty.

Yes, I always liked the Highland Dance at the beginning of the Richmond Ball at WATERLOO (1970)
Other Balls: THE SLIPPER AND THE ROSE: THE STORY OF CINDERELLA (1976) THE THREE MUSKETEERS (1974) The King's Masque, with everyone in White save for Cardinal Richelieu. The St. Petersburg Ball in WAR & PEACE comes to mind. The 1966-68 Russian Version is the most spectacular. I also liked the 1972 BBC-TV Serial version of the Ball. I also wish to note the ending of Episode 11 "Men of Destiny", with the Russian Ball playing when Alexander I learns that Napoleon has crossed into Russia. The festive Ballroom fades into an empty dark area as Napoleon enters a few hours later. ANASTASIA (1997)

Pretty much any Jane Austen adaptation will feature at least one ball scene: Pride and Prejudice Sense and Sensibility
