I have to admit, this episode wasn't bad. I thought Jon did an even better job with Lex in this episode than last week. It's still not quite so remarkable as to surpass John Shea, Michael Rosenbaum or Clancy Brown, but definitely far beyond any expectations of what they might do with the character or even Jon's ability as an actor to portray the part.
I also have to give props to Melissa; her accent wasn't nearly as bad as I feared it would be, based on last week's preview and it was interesting the way she played the double playing Kara, and the way there seemed to be a subtle trace of the accent when she was trying to hide it.
I'm curious what @deblovesbeccy will think of this episode and its nod to Supergirl's history; with the double using the alias Linda Lee, and the black wig.
I was slightly disappointed they glossed over the fact that Lex just casually knows Kara's secret identity. I mean yeah, he's one of the world's smartest humans; and if anyone can figure it out, Lex should be among the first, but it raises some other questions. Like, does he know Superman's identity too? Why doesn't he out either of them? What specifically tipped him off?
It was a clever bit of serendipity that Kara has an Alex in her life, that this double might be able to recall the name of, to then be able to flip it and have Lex use that to his advantage as an in with her.
I find myself contemplating a scenario where the show would take a bold turn and actually kill the original Kara, then replace her with this double; and explore the implications of someone who looks and sounds like a known character, may even recover more of the original's latent memories, yet have an entirely different perspective on her life and sort of have to learn what it means to be a hero and be part of the world. I sincerely doubt they'd go that route, but it definitely intrigues me enough to sort of hope they would. It would also be in keeping with the more long term history of "Supergirl" in which the mantle hasn't uniquely belonged to Kara Zor-El (along with Supergirl's history of being killed off...); and we'd get an iteration that more closely resembles one of the versions Deb often talks about, which greatly differs from Superman or the current version of Supergirl.
An additional component of that would be Alex and her potential relationship with this other Kara; especially taking into consideration Alex's own altered state of mind. There could be a lot of nuance to explore between Alex, who could have vague memories of her sister being Supergirl, working along side someone who is only sort of, yet not really sister; with similarly vague memories of Alex.
Of course I doubt that would happen; certainly not this season and probably not during Crisis on Infinite Earths, like she's supposed to either. The down side to a recurring series - and subsequently the "deal" Oliver made during the last crossover - is that they're going to rob these characters of the heroes death they deserve (at least for Barry - Kara's was maybe a little pointless) all to maintain either show's status quo.
At best, I expect they're going to use Kara's double to settle the question of Kara's secret identity, but clearly establishing publicly that Kara Danvers and Supergirl are entirely two separate people, without the use of shape shifters or personal holographic disguise. And then the double go off to lead the life of Thomas Riker... I mean, Linda Lee....
