Bob Hope. I still have one stamp from that edition that I've saved. I didn't know him, but I used to walk my dogs by his house in Toluca Lake, and that, along with my affection for his work, makes me feel like I knew him just a little.

Wow, that's so awesome for me seeing Mary Pickford, Fay Wray and John Candy in the same stamp series, three of the greatest, most iconic performers I've known. Thanks.

Bob Hope. I still have one stamp from that edition that I've saved. I didn't know him, but I used to walk my dogs by his house in Toluca Lake, and that, along with my affection for his work, makes me feel like I knew him just a little. You've reminded me of something I hadn't thought about in many years. In the early '70s, a friend had just moved into a house his father had purchased down the street from Hope's on Valley Spring Lane. One night, the friend said to me and another, "Let's walk over to Hope's house and see if he's home," and in our teenage naivete, we did just that. The man who answered the door told us very politely that Mr. Hope was out of town. The odds are that was probably true, but I imagine now the answer would have been the same if he'd been right there in the living room beyond. And that if we hadn't just as politely thanked him and left, a call to the police would have been in the offing. Three male teens asking if Bob Hope was home? What were we thinking? Only a few years later, I was working at an insurance company that carried his homeowner's insurance, which had a fine arts rider (paintings and sculptures, jewelry, cameras, awards and other valuable collectibles), and the many-pages schedule of items always provided entertaining reading during slow times in the office (and something of a vicarious tour of the place).

Oh, Doghouse6 , you're bringing back some memories now. Bold of you and your friend, indeed. And the stories you and I could doubtless share. . .
But back to stamps for now.

Slightly off topic, but just sharing that Greta Garbo graces the newest Swedish 100 note: And Ingmar Bergman is on the 200 note:
