Leonardo DiCaprio and Taiki Waititi are still on board as producer and director. It's one of eighteen movies that just scored a big time tax credit from the California Film Commission (CFC). TEXT: Leonardo DiCaprio is on board to produce the pic while Taika Waititi is still attached to direct. We haven’t heard much about the progress of this project for some time, so this news helps to reorient the time table. The last thing we did hear was that Waititi aimed to adapt writer/illustrator Katsuhiro Otomo‘s manga rather than remake the fan-favorite 1988 anime feature, and that he’d be casting Asian teenagers in the leads, which both befits the source material and avoids a Whitewashing PR disaster. However, it remains to be seen just how Waititi’s filmmaking and storytelling sensibilities will impact Akira, a story that certainly has its quirks and comedic moments but ultimately takes some serious turns. It's going to be a globalist multicultural mess. Why is the director not Japanese? This anti-national heritage attitude is so moronic. Globalists make crap art. The only thing that sustained them in the 30s and 40s was that most of the sensibility to the film structure they used was European. But these days they have whittled it away. Keep in mind--that it wasn't any of the big Hollywood studios that introduced Akira Kurosawa to North America. It was Roger Corman. Hollywood was satisfied with remaking his films as westerns (although Seven Samurai isn't a favorite, the story is much more intelligent than the Magnificent Seven remake which makes politically-motivated changes like the impossible scene of the gunfighters feeding the peasants or eliminating the sequence where the peasants commit a murder).
Watching Hollywood today is like observing a blind man trying to paint like Rembrandt with an echo chamber of paid fans telling us how brilliant the effort is.
