Good call on Redford, Bat. It reminds me of Warren Beatty, who received three Oscar nominations for his first directorial effort, Heaven Can Wait (1979) - directing, acting, and best picture - but with his second, Reds (1981), he won for best director and best picture, and was nominated for best actor and best screenplay (shared with with Trevor Griffiths). Quite an accomplishment, that.

Ron Howard's First Feature Film as Director GRAND THEFT AUTO (1977)"The crew were very impressed with first time director Ron Howard the first day they started filming. Most newbies producer Roger Corman hired were unsure of themselves and took awhile to get things going. But Howard knew exactly what he wanted and how to set up each shot because of his familiarity with film production from being in movies and shows as a kid and teen for so many years. " The first film to be shown three times in one day on HBO (shortly after HBO began broadcasting 24 hours).

" Some act, try directing and find that they like both so they do both."... French film actor, director, and writer Robert Hossein now in his 90s was still directing films up until a few years ago. Hossein began his cinematic career as an actor in 1948 and has appeared in over 110 films since. Hossein began directing in 1955 with a remarkable crime drama debut, Les salauds vont en enfer (1955) pictured below, in which he played a small part, and ranked up 24 directing credits to his name. His excellent films are crafted with unique Hossein characteristic trademarks, taut psychological drama composed of striking compositions with a twist to the tale...

I don't believe anyone has mentioned Alan Alda yet.
While he probably did his best direction on MASH episodes, he also directed a couple of pretty good films, including the underrated The Four Seasons.

I'll go with Warren Beatty. In the fore mentioned films, Beatty also produced and directed "Dick Tracy" which is includes an incredible cast and astonishing make up. And it showed that Madonna has acting chops.

I love Ladies in Lavender! I love Charles Dance. He is one of those actors whom, for no special reason , I will watch whenever I see his name.

Adding these three. I think all are likely to have enduring careers behind the camera, if they wish. All were just nominated for the DGA Award in the first-time feature film directing category.
Lin-Manuel Miranda, tick, tick...BOOM!
Maggie Gyllenhaal, The Lost DaughterAnd Rebecca Hall, Passing

I love Ladies In Lavender!
I love it, too, marsha. Lovely story and wonderful performances by all. Btw, I see that Charles Dance has a new directorial effort in pre-production: The Inn at the Edge of the World. Look forward to it. And speaking of Dance, that reminds me of another actor/director I should add:
Kenneth Branagh, directing his semi-autobiographical Belfast (a film I highly recommend). He just received a DGA award nomination for his work (first time; can't believe that). His script is moving, too, and the performances are wonderful.
And here are some of Branagh's best past directorial efforts (directing himself!):

John Krasinski got a lot of attention for A Quiet Place and its sequel, but I really enjoyed his earlier film, in which he also starred, The Hollars (2016).
