do you know the show called Better Things? With Pamela Adlon playing a mother of 3 young daughters?
Do you think that her parenting style is pretty realistic as a prevalent parenting style in the US?
I mean she lets them get away with murder and allows them be so nasty to her. Its really bugging me. But otherwise the show is great, smart, funny, well made...
I just wonder if this is how most US parents parent their children these days...

Well I do hear that lack of parents saying 'no' to kids here-and-there is pretty much making the kids grow up to be defiant/entitled etc. basically parents don't do their jobs like they used to it seems and that's not doing their kids, nor society, any favors.
p.s. I voted for 'never saw it'.

Saw a few episodes. It’s typical FX programming. As to the OP, for some parents, probably but I wouldn’t call it the reality.

Also she had this really crazy freak out at this one guy she has been dating for three weeks and I feel like the show is presenting it as her acting normal/in her right and I just cannot get behind it. Thats not “being nice” to sleep wth someone even though you dont like them at all and not communicate to them how much you cant stand them. thats being stupid and also as a result completelly wreckless. Plus she was really cindescendingn and demeaning to the guy and i didnt get what he did to deserve it. I get that its supposed to show a woman acting like a guy but I would have disliked if a guy did it just as much. but I still like the show.

Kids NEED to hear a firm "NO" every once in a while, not "what do you think, buddy?" Fuck that. The kids is a KID! He/she doesn't know what they want! That's what parents are there for! To know better and then teach it to them. When the fuck did parenting go away?

I've never seen the show but in our house NO definitely means NO. Especially when it involves candy or yet another toy. haha

not sure but i see it around me a lot, families that let their young kids treat their parents like shit and or their slaves... the parents dont want to “limit the childs sense of independence and own personality”. so they try to guide them to make the smart choices in their own. i saw a mom patiently keep explaining to her 4 year old bot why he should not be hitting her in anger with her fist. while he kept on hitting her in anger with his fist...

I don't mean to denigrate the human intellect, psyche, or children's intelligences, but at that age they haven't learned right and wrong, and don't have the emotional cushion to understand why what they're doing is wrong. You could explain all you want, they just don't get it yet. But if you spank that behind they'll get it!
And I'm not talking about some vicious beat down neither. I mean one good smack on the butt, and then let them cry. The bad behavior will stop in no time. Our parents did it from time to time. We didn't all turn into assholes from it. But these kids nowadays? They're growing up to be little assholes.

And while I didn't necessarilly do things her way with my girls, I would say she is actually a pretty good parent. PS. And now I have to ask, do you have kids Nora?

I think Pamela Adlon is Amazing and Sam is a very loving and committed parent I agree there, but why does she let the kids get away with being so rude to her?

I watched the show through the first season and thought the two older kids were borderline obnoxious. The youngest still retained some childhood sweetness. Two years later and they have all gone way over the top, aided and encouraged by their mother who makes no effort to discipline or discourage them. I've seen obnoxious kids but never encountered any on this level. If this anywhere and if this is the norm for some families than I'd say they're pretty much doomed.
