Years ago before I had glasses I saw Coraline in 3D at the theater. It had interesting drama and it was Henry Selick's best movie in my opinion. It wasn't musical like Nightmare Before Christmas and James and the Giant Peach. It remains in my opinion, Laika's best film to date.
I never really got into Paranorman because the characters weren't very interesting and the comedy wasn't funny. The plot twist towards the end was good but to me it felt like an animated version of a boring kid's movie. It was an improvement on the animation front but the movie as a whole could have been much better.
Boxtrolls I found to be better than Paranorman but it was really slow at the beginning and some of the comedy was actually funny. However, the ending was a little too light for such a serious premise and the movie had too many plot holes like how the Boxtrolls reproduce.
Kubo and the Two Strings is a good movie, excellent atmosphere and a good story that reminds me somewhat of the Thief of Baghdad. It is generally a good movie. The only thing about it that I don't like as much is how it contradicts its own message toward the end.
Missing Link is directed by Chris Butler, the director of Paranorman which I'm not too fond of so I'll probably wait to watch it on video.
What are your thoughts on the various Laika films?
