I think it's a boring word, with more connotation than meaning. I would only use the word if I were taking a college level sociology course and my prof were a woman and I wanted to get at least a "B". In which case I would probably use the word as many times as I could.

It's a feminist construct. It assumes there are also societies which are matriarchal. However, anthropologists have found no society on earth, even a simple stone age tribe, ancient or modern, where females were the "dominant" gender in society. Males and females play different gender roles. And in every society on earth they're amazingly similar, male is the hunter and soldier and provider, and females care for the children and take care of the hearth. Patriarchy is a myth. Both males and females are important as males and females in every society. Demonstrating that something isn't "a myth" is never the best way of asserting that it is.

It's innate to gender that human males will be stronger and bigger than females. And it's innate to gender that females get pregnant and take primary responsibility for raising children. If you want to call innate gender differences "patriarchy" then fine. It's the natural state of human beings and there is no traditional society on earth where these two genders are treated identically. Patriarchy is a social construct. Gender differences and the division of labor are real. I don't dispute your anthropological, historical or biological citations; merely your conclusion that what we call "patriarchy" is "a myth" after having provided a quite serviceable definition of it.

You're missing my point. there's a difference between using a word as part of your vocabulary and complaining about something you didn't even knew existed and didn't hurt you in any way until you learned the damn word. it doesn't make you look intelligent if you use a word and then when someone asks you to describe what exactly you mean and you can't even do it. |

Let me just put it this way since you're being purposely obtuse. It's a myth that "patriarchy" is anything different than men exerting their natural role as male humans. It's not some tyranny by men. It's instinctual to our species. In the same manner females dominate the domestic life of human beings. There is no "archy" by patriarchs or matriarchs (especially since anthropologists have concluded there is no true "matriarchal" society on earth.) Not at all; simply questioning your conclusion. Calling something a "social construct" or "myth" that you've repeatedly and emphatically asserted in other terms is self-contradictory. You've described what it is; "patriarchy" is what it's called.

Look at the Greek root words, fool. Perhaps in the cold light of day, you'll look at what you wrote the night before and find yourself scratching your own head at the contradiction. One can only hope. Or, perhaps, it isn't "patriarchy" at all but the word "myth" that you misunderstand. Or, just maybe, you're a myth and none of this ever actually happened.

Definition: A system of society or government in which the father or eldest male is head of the family and descent is traced through the male line.
A system of society or government in which men hold the power and women are largely excluded from it.
A society or community organized on patriarchal lines.

Of course patriarchy is real. Kingdoms were patriarchies. Queens were merely baby factories for a male heir unless the King had died and there was no male successor (which is what happened with Elizabeth 1, and she smartly had no children so she could never be succeeded). Corporations where men are the CEO and their eldest son takes over is a patriarchy. Any organization where a male has always been the top dog and he passes that power on to another male, particularly if that male is his son, is a patriarchy.
Dude, you've said that you're gay. I wonder if you really are. How can you be gay and not understand these things? Are you not even aware how patriarchies hurt gay movements? Patriarchies are usually very anti gay. You think an old white man wants to pass on his company and fortune to his gay son? Probably not. A lot of sons have been disowned just for being gay.
You're on the wrong side of the equation a lot of times. Why do you argue against your own self interests? Do you hate women so much that you'd side with men who hate you for being gay? How does that make sense?

I would question why you would be taking a gender studies course in the first place Mr. Dirty. Unless you wanted to be entertained. I wonder if any Gender Studies are taught by men.  Yes, that would be a possible reason to take a stupid "gender studies" course, to sit back in a room full of angry dykes and listen to how terrible all men are. I would laugh and laugh and they would get more and more angry and that would just make me laugh some more. They're just pissed cause they don't have their own dong to play with. Freud was so right. I don't think any men do teach the GS courses. It's a made up topic originating from the anger of the vagina. How miserable those creatures are.
