I couldn't believe what I was watching . This movie sucked. NO imagination. NO originality. 30 years after what should have been for all intents and purposes the end of the empire, we get a bad re-do of Star Wars - A New Hope. This movie should have been a story of how the Star Wars Universe progressed after the Empire was defeated, and instead we get a movie that took 5 minutes to write, because someone took the screenplay for Star Wars and all they did was change the character names. A story that showed after 30 years of the drastic changes that took place during Return of the Jedi, there was NO change in the Star Wars Universe. Same Plot - a bad imitation of the original movie. EVERYONE associated with this garbage pile should never be allowed to make another movie - ESPECIALLY that no talent hack J.J. Abrams. The biggest crime is the fact that the gullible public went to see this waste of time. Are we as a society really that stupid?
Meanwhile Rogue One is a near perfect companion to the beginning of ANH- not a ripoff at all. It wasnt perfect but the last half of the film contained some of the best star wars scenes on film yet. Rogue one just made ANH that much better- and vice verssa. I wish i didnt even watch TFA- and i certainly wont see any more sequels to it
First Order? is such an Empire ripoff. How stupid are the bad guys to make ANOTHER planet killing superweapon? Ya think they didnt learn from the mistake of wasting time making and using the first 2 death stars? Why would they bother? Might as well paint a huge target on it. Why not simply make a larger fleet?

This was mostly my initial reaction. I was hoping others would see what I saw, but instead, everyone was praising the film after it's release in theaters. The small crowd of us that disliked it were called "nit picky", "haters", or "prequel lovers".

I don't need sexist propaganda and rehashed/rebooted tropes or direct nods to fans to enjoy SW. Unfortunately for us, Disney knows those things will sell, so that's what we're getting.

That said, Rogue One was mostly solid, but less a 'saga' film, granted, it wasn't trying to be one. TFA is just lost, confused...a mutation.

i don't like the movie, saw it free & still turned it off after the 30m mark. but what i dont like especially is the precedent that it is trying to set:
MOAR BIG TENTPOLE FRANCHISES!!! MOAR MERCH! MOAR MONEY!
they are just going to keep doing this, again & again ad nauseum until the public tires of this formula, then they move onto the next formula...
if you haven't noticed, there are no more experimental movies being made, just adaptations, remakes, reboots, rehashed bullshit.
milk it for what it's worth you money grubbing corporate exec's, cause it's raining in corporate heaven... all the angels are 'a singin.

Im waiting for the next crappy Spiderman reboot( i heard whoever owns the Spiderman movie rights have to put a movie out every so many years or else they will lose their rights to it) I wish someone could come up with an original idea someday.

Blade Runner is a good example, it "flopped" & was not considered a success during its release, it was largely experimental & risky & had numerous problems during filming. But in the end, Blade Runner is considered a masterpiece today, & set the standard for decades of sci-fi.

Original films all over the place if people look for them. I recommend most anything from A24 films when one's taste is looking for something "different". I highly recommend "The VVitch", "Ex Machina", and if you want something silly and original, "Swiss Army Man". I haven't seen "A Ghost Story" yet, but I'm looking forward to seeing that one when I get the opportunity.
As far as the Sequel Trilogy goes, I liked TFA because it reignited the grand Soap Opera that had been stuck at the teddy bear picnic for over 30 years. The story of a family, their friends, and their faith finally in motion again. The prequels were fun enough an gave plenty of interesting background, but I personally found it hard to appreciate Episode 1, 2 or 3 as much as the OT when I already knew where the story went through the next 3 episodes.
It was indeed a low down dirty shame in TFA that the spaceships part of the story was a rehash, and I agree that there could have been a much better original universe story that the family drama rode upon. I don't let that ruin my enjoyment finally being able to speculate as to "what's next", once again when it comes to the Skywalker family, their friends, and their "Force". Here in a few months, I'll finally get another two hour fix of the soap to line up another two years of wondering what's going to happen next episode.
Sorry that the way I look at it doesn't fit the bill for all. I doubt there will ever be a universally loved way to jump start the saga.

But I don't expect a Star Wars movie to be like that or like "2001". * Star Wars movies are; mass, popular entertainment. - Starting with "Return of the Jedi" the SW films are designed to attract every big piece of the mass audience and sell lots of toys. - Lucas experimented once in a science fiction art style with "THX 1138" which barely broke even in theaters. * The massive profits from Star Wars built the Lucas studios for films, games, sound and special effects. Lucas and now Disney are not going to decide; 'gee let's take chances so we might lose money'. No. Disney created the most popular Star Wars movie they could think of with TFA and it made $2 billion in theaters. That is what the Star Wars franchise is, a series of blockbusters. It's not art SF like "Blade Runner" or "Solaris". It never has been. Imo at least, BB ;-)

The only Star Wars film that was like that for me was Revenge of the Sith.... I kinda like ROTS. It was the best prequel trilogy film by far. At least we got to see how Anakin became Darth Vader- and explained why he needed the black suit. Good battles, Good ending. Not great though.
