Yes, I am a bit of a recluse, don't get out that much, but to navigate a grocery store I have to wear earbuds with my iPod on with music loud enough to drown out the overhead music, cell-phone conversations, screaming children, announcements over the speaker system, general loud conversations, flip-flops, clunking boots, etc., ad nauseum.
I generally choose music that has an orchestra and a choir - example: Mozart's Requiem Mass. I know it well, and listening to it can allow me to focus on what I am shopping for and not get distracted by the utter chaos all around me.
A good friend of mine thinks I'm totally nuts, though she herself is part of the roar, talking on her cell phone big and loud. Am I simply maladjusted and too sensitive, or do others have this issue?

I never thought about it. But the Muzak is now interesting. 50 years ago no one imagined that T.Rex would end up being the music play in supermarkets. Hmmm... maybe Muzak in California is interesting, but where I live, it's country/western or disco. I would like either classic rock or classical instrumental without vocals. I think people talk louder to each other when someone is singing.

I try not to go out. But when I do go grocery shopping, I don't notice the noise level to be honest. I tend to notice bad parenting though, which is my big pet peeve. Bad parenting is another distractor, and had I acted that way as a kid, I would have been left at home or locked in the car.

No I'm usually just pissed off with the old ladies and their shopping carts always in my way. I'm an old lady, and my cart stays to the right so someone can pass or come the other way. I get irritated with the mothers with swarms of small children blocking an entire aisle.

I will agree that most of those things can be annoying, at times, but I try not to let them bother me... However... The number one thing on my list of things that I hate the MOST about going out in public! I try to avoid most of them, by going in the mornings, during the week, when most kids are in school, and very few people are out at the store shopping... But, it can't always avoid them. Babies are 'excusable', because they are just too young to understand what it means to be behaved or to listen to their parents... But "4" year-olds running around the store and colliding with other customers, or they are screaming because they are having a tantrum... Well, that's just unacceptable! Parents, Listen Up... Grocery Stores are NOT Playgrounds!!! ...Please... Control your little 'shits', or keep them at home!

In my corner of the planet, the grocery stores seem to think everybody loves jazz. Not my first choice for an already challenging outing.

The grocery store is rather quiet at 7 AM.

Not really. But I normally do most of my shopping at around 0600 hours in the morning... It's much more peaceful then.

Yes and No. (I voted other.) As someone who is 60 years old, I share your attraction to peace and quiet. And irratation from noise. I seem to be the only person in my neighborhood who is irratated by the loud music my neighbors sometimes play on the weekends. I am also very sensitive to the range of volume of most movies today. I am constantly using my remote control to adjust the volume between low talking and dramatic music. But no to grocery stores. The level of noise doesn't seem excessive to me. And I often find the speaker music (muzak) appealing. I guess everybody is different.

Nope. Though I usually shop after 8pm or before 10am. My grocery is open 7am-11pm 7 days a week, & has self checkout to avoid the couponers & $0.30 cents wrong price rage.

Rarely, if ever. Loud restaurants bother me much more.

For me I answered sometimes, because it does depend on the volume of the music, sometimes even the style of music being played. Grocery stores most of the time no. Sometimes I don't even hear any music at grocery stores. Some other stores yes it bothers me. Often the volume of the music at Chipotle annoys me.

I voted for the "Rarely" option. Most of the time I can tune out the ambient noise. It probably helps that I rarely shop during the day.
My biggest problem with grocery stores is the layout. They deliberately put all the staples in the back of the store, under the assumption that you'll fill your cart with everything you pass on the way there. But in my case, if I want only milk, I buy only milk, so this layout is an annoyance.

I like kids, but when they start getting wildly emotional and screaming like they're bleing fed to the lions, it can be a bit too much. My mother would just remove me if I started that. How parents can sit there and not consider others around them sometimes baffles me. I sound like an old grump without kids, which I am. 😁 I like good music playing while I shop though.

No. I just tune it out. It's like a muscle and really annoying for certain, some, a lot of people that I know.

I go in the middle of the night now. But when we used to go at the "regular" hours, people yakking on their phones annoyed/bothered me. Because in the middle of an aisle they have to shout into their phone, plus we get to hear the person on the other end due to them having it on speaker. I don't give a flying FFFF what you did last night, I'm trying to actually shop for my groceries. Then there's the employees when they drop the pallet jacks when unloading pallets. I used to do this, they do not have to just "drop" it.
