I know that I personally is a bit out of step concerning this movie. Hadn't seen it for over 35 years, and whatever I thought before, It was like watching a brand new movie.
Surpriced this one didn't have a poll!

8/10 but a lot of that is for the FX. I think the characters in reflection are kind of weak. Not really a fan of the 1950s version but the characters (despite some hokey bits) are more developed.

One of the first, and best, dvds I watched was Carpenter's The Thing.
I have probably watched it a dozen times since. Fantastic film. Great commentary track with Russell and Carpenter.
10/10
I also watched the Howard Hawks version and that might have surprised me even more. I did not expect to like that as much as I did.
10/10 for that as well.

10.
practical effects that still boggles the mind 37 years later.
And a ending so bleak and hopeless.

10/10. Back in the day I had this movie on video disk and watched it over and over again.
I loved the 1951 version too and bought it on video disk at the same time, but I'm told that the 1982 version follows the original short story more closely.

8/10.
Terrific effects, cool setting (pardon the pun) and neat plot. Not a huge fan of the soundtrack though and I don't adore it to quite the extent that I know many horror fans do. A very good film all the same.

8/10. Terrific effects, cool setting (pardon the pun) and neat plot. Not a huge fan of the soundtrack though and I don't adore it to quite the extent that I know many horror fans do. A very good film all the same. Effects, setting, plot... this sums up why director John Carpenter says the original movie of "The Thing from Another World" was his favorite movie of all-time and is why he remade it. He even features the original film in a scene from his movie, "Halloween" (1978). Tommy and Lindsay watch it while Tommy freaks out about the coming 'Boogeyman' (Michael Myers).
The soundtrack is great, I mean that it's written and scored by Carpenter himself. What director does that today, in his own horror movies especially? Doesn't exist. This movie's score is simple, but hauntingly settling. Kind of like the score he did for "Christine". Which was way less popular of a film but memorable. A wonderful soundtrack score but nothing compared to say "Halloween" and "The Fog" etc.
I give this movie a 9/10. I'd probably give it a 10/10 but I think I over-watched this movie, a long time ago lol. I should go back and play the video game on PS2 if anything, which begins with a rescue team (you), landing at the same blown apart Kurt Russell base; finding the remains of one skeleton dead alone in an empty shack and not two (ending of "The Thing" movie). Going on to find MacReady's recorded tapes as to what happened. The video game was effed up, in a good way, ha.
I adore the movie, but I don't dislike someone only liking it 8/10. Now if someone said they only like it 2/10, well... ha. Special make-up artist Rob Bottin, an artist who never got the credit he deserved. He went all out on this film. I believe he even went into a huge depression after the stress of creating these effects on this movie, if memory serves. He was a total genius of the '80s in my opinion. You hear the big names such as Rick Baker and Stan Winston, but never Bottin's name. Winston I so love, too. Whom created the Alien Queen in "Aliens", the T-Rex in "Jurassic Park" and the Exoskeleton T-100 in "The Terminator" etc. Legendary stuff. Rob Bottin, created "The Fog" zombie/ghosts, "The Howling" werewolves, the "Explorers" aliens and alien ship, the "Legend" devil and puppets, the "Innerspace" inside graphics of actor Martin Short, the "Robocop" gore/kills/deaths, and the "Total Recall" badassery everything etc. Long run-on sentence, sorry, ha. Just saying, one horror fan to another from the '80s, Bottin was awesome.
Thanks for the add, sir! I try and engage where I can, when I can ha.
Special Effects Artist, Rob Bottin. R.I.P.
