I did not think Hellboy was that bad. it had some funny lines, nice amount of gore, even some good acting and moral conflicts. pretty entertaining overall 6 out of 10. Mainly practical effects I assume? Neil Marshall favors practical effects over CGI which is one of the reasons why I like him. Same here.

It's terrible. I can't think of one good thing to say about it. 2/10.

RT has shown to be unreliable and deceitful ever since that Captain Marvel debacle and them messing with the audience scores. There was some people who liked the film. Even they admitted that the film had a lot of flaws but they still enjoyed it. But, it's ultimately up to you on whether you want to see it or not. Oh yeah, because the public is always sincere and never overreacts.

According to those audience scores only like 25% of the public "wanted to see" Captain Marvel, and yet the movie made a billion dollars. Also, the same people who claim that their totally non-troll ratings were discarded were the same people bragging online that they were going to "review bomb" the movie as soon as it was released.

It was a troubled shoot. Reportedly director Neil Marshall and the producers didn't see eye to eye during production. Ian McShane and David Harbour seem to have behaved like jerks too, with writing their own lines and siding with the producers against the director.

I am seriously disappointed with the reception to this film. I have seen it twice now and have found it terrific and it incorporates the King Arthur legend into its context quite flawlessly. Something that Transformers: The Last Knight - 17' did abysmally. That said, I like the darker tone and theme of the film compared to other superhero films—enjoyed Venom for that reason, even though it was PG13—which I am not a big admirer of and don't often go out of my way to see. Seeing you say that Toasted Cheese gives me hope we might still like the movie when I see it on Foxtel. It is getting a lot of bad reviews from critics and fans but we are still going to watch it and make up our own mind 'cause being a Horror fan I tend to like a lot of movies that aren't well received by a mainstream audience and usually what most people say is very violent or full of blood and gore is quite tame compared to the Horror movies and comic books I have seen over the years. Have you read the 'Hellboy' comic books?

Have you read the 'Hellboy' comic books? I think Hellboy was borderline MA15+ to R18+ and it is mostly CGI gore and it is depicted in a fantasy realm context. It still contains some graphic imagery, which I think was too strong for the guidelines of MA15+. The appeal failed and it had to keep the R18 rating. I thought it had a terrific atmosphere and was more horror toned than anything else, but infused with humor.
I haven't read the comics, I am not into comics as you are Deb and have not seen the Del Toro Hellboys.
Okay. Thanks for letting me know about that. I am often confused about the ratings for movies here and in America 'cause there are a lot of superhero movies by DC and Marvel which I hear were only rated PG in America but are rated 'M' here and the 'Spider-Man', Iron Man' and 'X Men' movies are a good example of that and they have 'M' on the DVDs here. I think sometimes the board give too higher ratings for some movies here that should be lower along with TV Shows but then I have seen movies which are more violent which I feel should have an R rating and it makes you wonder how they come up with these ratings. I love Horror movies so I will probably like it and another Horror Superhero movie I am really looking forward to is 'Razor' which has Emma Dumont from 'The Gifted' in the leading role. Not being a comic book fan I will let you know 'Razor' is awesome and if you are a fan of 'The Crow' (who had a team up series with her at one point) you might like 'Razor.' It has a reputation for being one of the most controversial comic book series ever made and is full of violence, blood, gore and nudity and Razor (Nicole) is raised from the dead and has razors inserted in her arms and she takes pleasure in killing rapists, pedophiles and serial killers and she cuts their heads, arms and penises off and covers herself with their blood and this movie is going to be a lot of fun for Horror fans.

Razor looks pretty hardcore.
With ratings, if the films are American produced, even if they are filmed in other countries, they are made to appease the American classification system first. Most of the superhero films get a PG13 rating in the US. Their PG, like ours, is one notch above G. Their PG13 is like our M, but guidelines are different and US R rated films, have the same stipulation as our MA15+, but the age is 17 in the US not 15 for parental accompaniment. They have a NC17 rating too, which means no one under 17 admitted, but many exhibitors refuse to screen these in the US.
Many US R rated films have been M here and some PG13 have been MA15+. It is all rather confusing. Why not just have a global film classification system for English speaking countries? They are the same films people are watching.
Because we gotta think about the children.

Yeah. 'Razor' is hardcore and should end up being a great movie and one that doesn't hold back or is watered down like the old 'Spawn' and 'Faust: Love of the Damned' which is a lot of fans didn't like. Faust' should have been the most violent and goriest movie made in history. The author (Tim Vigil) created it from his nightmares which terrified him for years and when he created the comic book he wanted to scare people and make people vomit and we ended up getting a movie that wasn't that much more violent than the 'Spider-Man' and 'X Men' movies that came out around the time. One of the things I like about 'Razor' is Rob Cohen said the movie wasn't going to hold back even if it meant getting an X rating 'cause it isn't a movie he wants children watching and he described it as being a strong feminist movie like nothing we have had on screen before. The character 'Razor' was based on the creator, Everette Hartsoe's sister who died being a real life vigilante and while she doesn't have superpowers when she is brought back to life she doesn't feel any pain. They are already setting it up to be a franchise and have a spinoff of Stryke (Nicole's Sister) in development too.
Thanks for letting me know about the movie ratings and I agree with you about there should be one that covers all English speaking countries but they are weird with things like that and it is like Region codes on DVDs and Blu Rays and as you would most likely know we have to get certain DVD and Blu Ray players here to watch American DVDs and Blu Rays 'cause they don't work in regular players and I never understood why they needed region codes 'cause the companies would make more money without them and limit most of the sales to one or two countries.

HELLBOY 2004 8/10 HELLBOY PART II: THE GOLDEN ARMY 6/10 While HELLBOY 2004 and HELLBOY PART II: THE GOLDEN ARMY featured great practical effects, there was 1 flaw: The title character's torso looked like a suit with 2 big flat rocks. In HELLBOY 2019, Joel Harlow and his make-up team do a better job in this regard. If only director Neil Marshall had been given them the chance to do more work, rather than relying on unconvincing CGI. And if only he knew how to pace a movie better. This reboot opens with a prologue where so many things happen that it could've easily lasted 5-10 minutes, but it lasts 2 minutes. In fact, the 2nd scene shows a tragic moment that didn't make me feel anything because I hadn't gotten to know the characters yet. I was dreading watching this after finding out it would be based on the comic books DARKNESS CALLS, THE WILD HUNT and THE STORM AND THE FURY. They were boring and overly complicated. They also downplayed HELLBOY's personality. A lot of his dialogue consisted on A) giving generic answers to what other characters were saying, and B) saying "Son of a bitch" or "Son of a--" (with an interrumption) so many times it could've been a drinking game. The character could've had another name and it wouldn't have made a difference. This adaptation can't help but to feel dull and convoluted too, but it's a more tolerable experience thanks to the attempts at humour (even if they're mostly failed). That includes HELLBOY cracking jokes, which feels closer to the character I'm used to... but it's still not enough. He constantly displays what he's feeling. Isn't he supposed to be a tough guy who hide his emotions, either with humor or through a fake indifference? What a shame, because David Harbour's performance is as good as Ron Perlman's. 3/10 ------------------------------------- You can read comments of other movies in my blog.
