They tend to measure the overall quality just with that detail. In fact, it was kind of a miracle for Stephen to not trash the ELLIE/GAGE change. That's not really true for Stephen King. He's praised movies that have changed things and even found his way to defending the Dark Tower movie. He's really only taken The Shining to task for not being faithful enough.
