Ti West (Born: October 5, 1980 in Wilmington, Delaware, USA)
Eli Roth & Ti West
'The Moment Of Death' - Mean Lady ~ Dancing at the House of the Devil
.
It's possible that writer-director Ti West is American independent cinema's current model all-rounder. He's an accomplished director who's a crack editor, a keen cameraman who's gifted with a pen, a resourceful producer who acts and can compose music. His films are exercises in minimalism that carry a distinctive tone and look, which is something he's nurtured across varied genre productions. They all display an admirable attention to detail. He prefers the organic qualities offered by film, right down to print scratches, dirt marks and split hairs, but understands the requirements of the digital video revolution and its benefits. His fanbase has built up over time and proven to be exceptionally loyal; they will go see a movie if he's directed it.
West was born in Delaware and raised in Pennsylvania. As an only child, he was something of a culture vulture, absorbing multi-media elements like a sponge. He holds a strong connection to Connecticut and enjoys filming there. If a project takes him elsewhere, he's adaptable; he worked on location in North Carolina to shoot the second installment in the 'Cabin Fever' franchise which suffered extensive re-shoots and re-edits at the behest of the film's producers. Three years on from making the taut western 'In A Valley Of Violence' (2016), West's gained valuable experience working as a hired hand in television. I'd say it's high time he got back in the saddle ...
What are some of your favourite movies directed by Ti West?
Thanks.

I hated Cabin Fever 2 and his segments of VHS and ABCs of Death. On the other hand, The Sacrament is one of the better found footage movies and I liked House of the Devil (one of the few throwback movies that actually feels like it's part of the era it's homaging).

I like three horror films directed by Ti West and his western 'In A Valley Of Violence' (2016). I think he shoots horror with the skills of an editor. The three horror filmmakers who worked for producer Val Lewton in the 1940s - Frenchman Jacques Tourneur, American Robert Wise & Canadian Mark Robson - were all trained editors. Wes Craven and John Carpenter both worked as in-house editors which was an invaluable training ground. George Romero and Tobe Hooper were accomplished in the cutting room. I think horror filmmaking, like comedy, is all about timing and rhythm, so being able to edit is a handy skill to have.
AJ Bowen, Mary Woronov, Ti West, Jocelin Donahue, Tom Noonan & Greta Gerwig on the set of 'The House Of The Devil' (2009)
Pat Healy & Sara Paxton in 'The Innkeepers' (2011)
Gene Jones, AJ Bowen & Joe Swanberg in 'The Sacrament' (2013)
Ti West, Anna Kendrick, Joe Swanberg, Olivia Wilde, Jake Johnson & Ron Livingston line up for a screening of 'Drinking Buddies' (2013)
Joe Swanberg & the cast of 'Happy Christmas' (2014) attend the Sundance Film Festival

Like him a lot. The Innkeepers (my favorite), The House of the Devil and The Sacrament are great. I even kinda like Cabin Fever 2, it’s trashy fun.

‘The Innkeepers’ would have to be one of my horror favourites of the last decade. Sara Paxton and Pat Healy worked off each nicely. I like it’s slow and quirky build up and even the jarring payoff.
House of the Devil, The Sacrament and The Roost. The latter film was surprisingly decent, with a good looking creature design.

I remember trying to buy 'The Roost' on dvd after it had been deleted in the U K. I should hunt down a copy.

the roost (2005) ☆☆ the house of the devil (2009) ☆☆1/2 cabin fever 2: spring fever (2009) ☆ the innkeepers (2011) ☆1/2 v/h/s (2012) ☆☆1/2 the abcs of death (2012) ☆☆ the sacrament (2013) ☆☆ in a valley of violence (2016) ☆☆1/2 (fairly entertaining western with a generic eye on spaghetti western.)
