So there's a lot of complaining about casting white actors in roles that were originally cast as other or had characters that were originally other. But no one is offering any solutions to the problem.
While we can agree that Ghost in the Shell should probably been cast with an Asian cast I think we can also agree that if it had been cast with Asian actors they would have been unknown actors, and that the movie probably would have done even worse at the box office.
Lets be honest, how many people would have actually gone to see it if it was cast with all unknown Asian actors? Most people would have written it off as an "Asian" movie, not "for us". I'm not accusing anyone of racism, it's just a state of mind (hopefully one we can overcome as time goes on).
There was every reason to believe that Ghost in the Shell could be a hit. Lucy, starring Scarlett Johansen, wasn't a monster hit, but it did very well for itself. I'm sure that's what they were hoping for this movie.
What's the solution for the whitewashing issue though?

The long term solution is that Hollywood begins promoting and/or hiring international film stars in the United States (and our planet's satellites ) same as they do their own to foreign audiences. Priyanka Chopra is a step in this direction.

Simple don't whitewash roles, there are plenty of movies that did fine with unknown white actors so the Same can be done with Asian Actors. Nobody watched this movie despite staring Scarlett

What's the solution for the whitewashing issue though? I'm 27 male and usually not grumpy, lol. That said I think people should either ignore casting all together or simply grow up! When one of my favorite works of Japan hit the big screen (All You Need Is Kill) I absolutelyloved the fact Tom Cruise was the main star, same with Ghost the only difference I have not watched any of the Ghost Anime. Still though, I think its perfectly fine for Hollywood to get dedicated natives to star in foreign material, why? Well lets face it these anime's will never sell with foreign or in this case asian actors. And on top of that if say Japan makes a movie based on their work better then what we have done (like with the most recent Godzilla flicks) then that just proves there can be TWO, maybe THREE versions that we can all enjoy if we aren't so uptight. Ok, I'm done, throw things at me at will! =)

The funny thing is that it's mostly the Americans who are complaining about the whitewashing in "Ghost in the Shell". I saw many Japanese viewers being interviewed about this and they all did not mind that Scar Jo was cast as the main lead. Many actually were quite happy as they love Scar Jo.
While there may be few Americans who enjoy watching Asian movies with all Asian actors, there are MANY MANY Asians who enjoy watching American movies with all American actors. Hollywood movies have an international appeal, unlike movies made in other countries. Hollywood actors and actresses are well known and loved all over the world.

I don't want make assumptions but if Japanese people are not upset, I would say because they don't live in America and don't see the movie as their problem or concern. If they had that problem in Japan I bet they would speak out. Asian Americans are the ones deal with the flak so I would say there opinions matter more rather than those that are not affected. Margot Robbie was the first choice back in 2014 and she was not bankable still is not.

Netflix clearly didn't even notice the whitewashing complaints for ghost in the shell, so they decided to make a death note film, whitewashed and set in America.

The whitewashing argument is pretty silly with the Major character in Ghost in the Shell. The robot body of Major was originally drawn as a Caucasian. Just because an anime film came from Japan does not mean that all the Caucasian looking anime characters can't be Caucasian in a live action movie. Characters who are Caucasian or who look Caucasian exist in anime. Imo at least, BB ;-)

To the guy that posted the pics Scarlett looks nothing like the character and Batou is miscast too.

I can think of no big name actress who would have looked more like Major from the anime than Scarlett Johansson. For instance; And; Imo at least, BB ;-)

While that is true, that is not the issue at hand here. People who are complaining about whitewashing aren't doing so because they are concerned about the employment of Asian American actors. They are complaining because they feel that the movie is not staying true to its source. So they don't care if the filmmakers cast Asian Americans or non-American Japanese actors. They just want the actors' race to match that of the characters'.

What you said is a legit reason to be upset when you whitewash this story Asian Americans are missing out and it does got against the source. would you use that argument if anybody but black actors were cast as black Panther or Luke Cage? I don't anybody would, Ghost in the Shell is the same deal as those two.

Again, you are missing my point. I am NOT talking about Asian Americans missing out on getting movie roles because of whitewashing. That is definitely a legit problem but that is not what I was talking about and also not what everybody in this thread is talking about. My point was simply that the Japanese don't mind if their original Japanese characters are played by Caucasians. Let me ask you a question. If "Ghost in the Shell" had starred a Japanese actress (not an Asian American), would you be okay with that? Or do you feel that it HAS to be an American citizen? What if the main role was played by a Caucasian who is not American but was born in Japan and is a Japanese citizen. Would you be okay with that?

They don't mind the casting because they don't see it as their concern Yeah I wouldn't mind If a Japanese Actress played the role since some get cast in American projects like Rila Fukushima and Rinko Kinichi. If the actress is not ethnically Asian I would have a problem doesn't matter if they are born in said country they are not Asian.

Asians who live in Asia don't really care about whitewashing in Hollywood movies that much. When I lived in Asia, we didn't give a crap about diversity, we just wanted a good movie with good actors. If we wanted to watch movies where our race was well represented we watched locally made movies. If we wanted to watch movies with Japanese actors we watched Japanese movies. Same thing with Chinese movies. It wasn't until I moved to North America that I kept hearing complaints about diversity and racism and sexism in movies. Maybe it's because North America is just a lot more diverse in it's population. And it's not a bad thing. I'm just pointing out it's mostly North America (and a few other first world countries) who make a big deal out of diversity in movies whereas majority of Asia (especially 3rd world countries and other parts of the world for that matter) don't really seem to care much.
