If you mean what is the most efficiently told story? I mean, supposing that you did, then I would say madame bovary. Even though I don't really relate to it's subject matter that much really. I mean, personally. It's the best example I can think of, which a book has an efficiently told story. So I'm saying it is good but only because of the story structure in it.
So if you want a book that has the best example of story structure, I don't think you could go wrong with this novel, imo.

Something that is very obscure by an even obscurer 18th century Czech novelist. It was a masterpiece of obscurantism but allows me to seem extremely cultured and a mater of recondite information. Then again, I hear that Steven King is very good.

My interpretation of 'greatest' means 'not once was I bored'. Going by that interpretation, my picks are:
-NOS4A2 - Joe Hill -Song of Ice and Fire: A Game of Thrones - George R R Martin -Blindness - Jose Saramago -Bird Box - Josh Malerman -Sherlock Holmes: The Hound of the Baskervilles - Arthur Conan Doyle
There are more, but those are off the top of my head. Since you specified 'novels', I have omitted non-fiction.
