This is probably a really dumb question, but was there anything stopping him from using it to get him and Thor out of trouble at the start of Infinity War?

He was prolly afraid Thanos would catch them in the nick of time.

He was prolly afraid Thanos would catch them in the nick of time. He could have easily not shown the tesseract and made his way to Thor then 'ported out. Or even made an illusion of the tesseract and given it to one of the Black Order before 'porting out. Another option was to teleport next to Thor and then teleport to Dr. Strange.

Shoot I didn’t think about that. Wait, wouldn’t that be incapable for Loki since Thanos was already holding Thor before he could teleport with him?

We saw that Thanos was pulled into that one at the end. Have the one he makes next to Thor pull him in.

His illusions are intangible.

He was going for the hero moment to kill Thanos, remember?

That he can't do. His illusions are intangible. That's why he ports out quickly. But then why the subterfuge? Why allow a member of the Black Order to get close to him?

I don't know if there was anything technically stopping him. I do think that if he considered the possibility, he elected to earn their trust enough to get close to Thanos and go for the kill-shot instead. It didn't work, but it was a noble effort. If he had landed it, it would have changed the tide of the universe.
I guess it's one of the never ending conundrums. You're close enough to Hitler that you could reach out and touch him. You have the opportunity to attempt a kill-shot, knowing you probably won't make it out alive. Even if you succeed, his underlings will kill you on the spot. Do you still try? Is it worth it? If the opportunity presents itself, do you make an attempt on Hitler?
I thought it was worth asking.

They had him surrounded with their weapons on him. Exactly. So what would an illusion of the cube do? Distract them. They were kinda lax with him after he produced it.

Distract them. They were kinda lax with him after he produced it. Ok, I can see what you're getting at? The thing about heroes and villains is that heroes don't have imaginations until the end of the movie or fighting thugs/minions. Loki made a hero turn and didn't think like the old Loki. Villain Loki would have found a way to survive that and get out of there (Endgame).
