I think that instinctively, due to the kinds of individuals the human gene pool produces and the kind of species humanity is, there is a feeling that in general, life is precious...not only one's own life but the lives of those around him. If our gene pool didn't produce individuals who generally and instinctively thought that, I don't think humans would've survived the crucial early stages of our species development. That feeling may well have made the difference between homo sapiens surviving and other early hominids not surviving.
The "feeling" of the importance of life and individual's lives dwindles as the life in question is more distant from one genetically. That's why, sad as it is to say, folks generally seem to be less incensed at tragedies that befall those who are distant from them, geographically and politically (IE from different countries or even of different political beliefs) than they are to what happens to folks who live nearby and/or who think like them. I think it is a reflection on the instinctive tendency of feel like those who are distant (politically/geographically) are less related genetically. So we can "agree" that life isn't precious, but I don't think that reflects human nature.

Maybe we should amend that maxim to "Life should be precious."

Life is as precious as society as a whole chooses it to be.

those who inspire poetry are precious to me.
and one could argue poetry is everywhere.
so would precious be everywhere?

Life is probably the most valuable thing in the universe.
It's the only thing that gives it purpose.

Human life is mundane in it's utter futility and deeply harmful to the planet's ecosystem. We are an anomaly and ideally should be wiped out as soon as possible. Meantime I think I'll have another beer and put the footie on.

Also Orient have had a good enough season already. Share the glory around a bit.

7 billion people on the planet at the moment. If 10% of them were to drop dead tomorrow obviously I'd be very curious about the reason, but unless that 10% included some of my close family and friends I really wouldn't be upset.
Life is only precious because we assign a story to it. As Stalin once said "one death is a tragedy, a million is a statistic". If life really was precious then we'd all be doing more to sort out the world's problems.

Um, no. Are you fine with US imperialism and global militarism? I would say that kind of cynical view on humanity can lead to such destructive policies.

Depending on definitions and semantics, seeing it is the only one we all ever have, I would tend to disagree.

Your life, and the lives of those closest to you, may be precious to you, but doesn't that importance lose meaning as you broaden the circle? Think of your life as a family photo album. Your family pictures might be precious to you and your family, but they're not precious to anyone else. Thoughts? Well, my dear advocate, do human beings ever agree upon anything?

It may not be precious, but it is all people have.

If everyone lived as I did, not one single human would die except for natural causes and an occasional disaster. It's not even difficult.

Yeah...that's pretty obvious from your general world view.
Do you live in Kentucky?

Yes, I live in KY. However, most Americans don't own a gun.
