Brandon Routh had a not-so-super breakthrough Dormant since the failure of 1987's Superman IV: The Quest for Peace, the Superman franchise returned in 2006 with, uh, Superman Returns. Replacing the late, great Christopher Reeve in the tights, cape, and helmet hair: Brandon Routh, an affable and handsome young actor whose resume to that point consisted almost entirely of bit parts and guest-star roles. Superman Returns was supposed to be a massive blockbuster, and it was supposed to make Routh a household name, or at least the anchor of a long-running Superman franchise. Neither of those things happened. Superman Returns didn't bomb, but it wasn't exactly a cultural event. It inched over the $200 million mark, which, combined with the relatively meager $191 million from foreign markets, barely covered the $270 production budget. While director Bryan Singer and co-star Kevin Spacey (he was Lex Luthor) recovered (until 2017), it was Routh's career that suffered. He didn't show up in a movie — a small role in Zack and Miri Make a Porno — for two years. Since then, he's done mostly supporting roles and TV gigs, with his most notable as of this writing in yet another, less notable comic book-based leading role as Ray Palmer/The Atom in The CW's Legends of Tomorrow. He didn't have a career before Superman Returns and I think he turned out OK.

Totally! And I have to say, the world didn't miss much. James Marsden was right there and he'd have been a better Superman. That movie was badly miscast anyway. Kate Bosworth was too young to play Lois Lane. Worse yet, they had Parker Posey right there who'd been perfect.

Or was it growing up in Iowa that doomed his career from the start?

Actually, Robin Tunney would have been the perfect Lois, especially since this was supposed to be a sequel to I and II.

No. Also, people can think whatever they want to think about him. He WAS Superman. Actually played the character in a blockbuster. And nobody can take that from him. He's like a one-time World Champion. Yeah he only had one title reign, but he was still a Champion. This guy gets it.

Brandon Routh had a not-so-super breakthrough Hell... Being The Atom (another DC character on Legends of Tomorrow) ain't nothing to sneeze at...

Who cares.
There are far more important things to be concerned about.

Look at Titanic. Look at him bald, he looks like the Animated Series Lex. Kate Beckinsale from Pearl Harbor at the time would have been a perfect Lois Lane. There was never a better time in history to cast a live action Superman movie other than Chris Reeve being the perfect Superman.

It was?
Everything I heard back in the day was... That the movie was supposed to have been a "Get The Franchise Back On Track Film"
I've always thought, and still do, that the movie accomplished that task!
If movie goers expect otherwise, well then that was their problem, not the film...
I guess people were to damned impatient to wait for "Superman Returns 2", which was going to be what more people wanted to see...
As for Brandon Routh, I thought he was excellent in the role... He did a fantastic job of picking up the role from Christopher Reeve.
I honestly can't understand how anyone can think, that this movie ruined his career...
I've seen many actors that had a great role, to then suddenly "disappear" from the industry... Nothing new here.
At least he's back, even if it is on TV... and he's doing a great job with the new role.

Never saw it. Only things I remember about it are Lex Luthor's WRONG and the bullet on his eyeball.

That is such an under-rated movie.

There was very little I liked about it beyond its aesthetic.
I wish Man of Steel looked like this but kept most of the action that is lacking from this one.

I guess Frank Langella & James Marsden must’ve hit it off on set — they both went on to star together in The Box (2009) and Robot & Frank (2012).

I liked Superman Returns, it wasn't perfect, but it was a worthy try. A better Superman film there had not been since 1980.
