So the first one was dumb but mildly enjoyable, thanks largely to the lead performance. Here we have the diminished returns of the same thing, but with convoluted science added.
Didn't completely hate it, but not good. Tree's actions don't make a lot of sense in this movie. For one, going out of her way to save that petty, psychopathic roommate. I get that she's not trying to murder you in THIS universe, but that's only because the circumstances are different. She's still a petty psychopath.
And then the semi-romance was cute enough in the first one, but trading your mother's life for a relationship with the Jason London nerd? I don't think the chemistry was quite there to justify it.

I agree all around. I feel like the initial idea that's presented would have been a superior movie: The side character from the first movie becomes the main character with the same dilemma. She still could have played a crucial part in guiding him, but it would have been his movie and you could have spared us all of the half asked psuedo science bullshit.
The scene where she realizes she's back in her dilemma after getting out was nice, and you still could have kept it in there in that scenario if one of his decisions leads to her getting killed, or whatever, but we could have had something more aligned with the original instead of some stupid attempt at nonsensical science fiction.
Also, it doesn't make much sense that she chooses to live in the dimension without her mom at the end. That decision felt very false and convoluted.

I keep hearing that this one isn’t as good as the first. However I’ll still watch it cause I am interested.

Oh, I was all onboard when I thought that's where it was going. I actually had the impression from the little bit of advertising I saw that all of the main characters would be reliving the same day and it'd be a full-on slasher movie. Either would be better than a complete remake of the first mixed with CW's Flash.

When it presented itself as that at first I thought that it was actually a really clever and novel approach to sequelizing the first one, but then it threw that approach out so quickly.

It’s not amazing but it’s fun and it sets itself apart from other slasher movies. Yeah that's fair. It wasn't great and there are a lot of things to pick apart and some annoying details and flourishes, but it was an attempt at being a little different. I just didn't love the execution. I'd agree though that the main girl was good (most of the cast actually), and the way she actually had an arc is nice for a slasher movie. They usually don't develop those characters.

Finally got done watching it. I admit it’s basically just a rehash of the first film with a science fiction twist added. Wished they did have the Asian dude as the protagonist as well. They really dropped the ball with the twist at the end and the reasoning behind it, which almost makes no sense.
But there are elements worth noting. I thought Tree’s reunion with her mother was sweet, the acting is still solid, and the movie is really funny.
Sadly though, as they just announced that they won’t be making a third entry, it only further shows that you can go so far with a concept until it dies down. The first one worked because it was something fresh and unique for the horror genre that hasn’t been done before (if you forget about Groundhog Day).
