‘The massacre of St Gerard’, refer to the killings of ten people in the ‘Bar du Telephone’ in Marseille, France on October 3 1978. As the owner of the bar André Léoni was about to close, three armed masked men walked into the bar on 8, Boulevard Commandant Finat-Duclos, shortly before 8pm and shot everybody present, killing them. The only survivor was the owner’s wife Nicole Léoni who was in an upstairs room. She heard shots at 8.10pm. Her husband and her brother in law were also killed. She came face to face with one of the killers but he spared her.
The victims were shot with an automatic 11.43 and 9mm a caliber 12. The killers said nothing and in less than four minutes they murdered ten people. Nothing was broken inside the bar, including glasses, mirrors and bottles.
The victims were: Alain Armanian, Guy Audemard, Fernand Bourrelly, Henri Ciron, Francis Fernandez, Noël Kokos, Jean-Claude Quercia, Paul Straboni and Marcel Touchard and the owner André Léoni.
When police walked inside, they found ten bodies. Four left at the entrance, two behind the counter, two others at the back of the room, a curled up in the back room and one last in the kitchen. Francis Fernandez was still breathing but died after 17 days in the hospital.
Settlement of accounts
Each victim was shot in the legs or the stomach and then executed with a bullet in the head. Only a total of two bullets missed their targets.
The killings have been carried out by professionals. A fourth man, the driver was waiting for them outside. Out of the ten victims, four were known to the police, including two that were released from prison but only for minor offenses. The others were people playing cards. Perhaps a customer identified one or more of the gunmen and it was deemed necessary not to leave any witnesses. One source said that perhaps one of the victims pulled out the masque form one of the killers and that was the reason for the extent of the bloodshed.
Pierre Michel
Thirty eight year old Pierre Michel, a brilliant investigative judge in charge of the case was himself executed with three bullets, on October 21 1981.
Francois Cecchi and Francois Girard, both gangsters of the ‘French Sicilian Connection’ were imprisoned for life, for Michel’s assassination but nobody was ever convicted for the murders in the bar.
THEORIES
1 – Were the killings part of a gang war between organised crime gangsters led by Tony Zampa and opposing Jack le Mat?
2 – A settlement of accounts between pimps gone wrong?
3 – Settlement of accounts because of counterfeit money?
