I know this is random, but have you ever been so late watching something long after the vast majority of society and then you want to discuss it anyway?
Well, I just around to watching Captain America Civil War.... Don't judge, I have a variety of excuses. For starters, I'm terrible at actually bothering to watch movies to begin with, even when I really want to see them. I don't typically bother going to the theater, since I'm cheap and poor. The last time I went to see a movie in the theatre was Rogue One; and before that we're talking decades. I'm not sure, but there's a distinct possibility the last time I was in a theater before Rogue One was to see Titanic and I'm not 100% if I even saw that in the theatre. I vaguely remember making plans to see that with some friends when we were in high school, but I can't remember if we actually went or not; and I can't think of any movie that came out since then that I can actually say I saw in the theatre. And the main reason I saw Rogue One in the theatre is because my brother is a Star Wars fan, for some reason, and he was going through some health issues and I took him to see it as a Christmas present; and we sat in the back and cracked jokes... But I digress.... My other excuse I guess is an attention span thing; like I can't just be doing only one thing at a time any more. If I'm watching something I want to be browsing the web or playing a game; and even then, watching a movie requires such a long chunk of time that I feel the need to be in the mood to watch a movie to make that kind of investment in time, even if otherwise I'd just be watching the same amount of TV....
Then to top it off, I'm kind of a stickler for watching stuff in the right order; even if they're not directly related, just set in the same continuity, I still want to experience the intended flow of the narrative. So when I get behind on one movie and another comes out, I get behind on those. Suffice it to say, I haven't the third Thor movie (or, strictly speaking, the second one either), infinity War, Doctor Strange or Ant-man and the Wasp.... But because I know I probably wont get around to watching a movie right away, I allow myself to get spoiled on key elements and often seek out summaries, because why not? If it weren't for Youtube channels like Cinema Sins, I'd probably have no idea what was going on with half the MCU (or the DCEU for that matter. I definitely didn't watch Batman V Superman and the longer I put it off the less I wanted to watch it)
So I knew the highlights of CA Civil War going in, but I have to say..... it's really boring. I mean, I've seen plenty of discussions about the movie and analysis; and like I said, I watch Cinema Sins, so you know they ripped Civil War a new one. I knew there were some questionable plot discrepancies, but I don't think I ever got the impression of just how dull the first half of the movie; and how anticlimactic the second half was. The excuse for the conflict was suepr flimsy and not nearly as well constructed as I would have liked; though I had at least some inkling of that to begin with. And the thing that gets me is that if anyone should be in favor of proper oversight, it should arguably be Cap. I mean, he's a true blue soldier, he'd have deep respect for authority, even when he doesn't agree with that authority. Meanwhile Tony, especially in the movies, has never been big on rules and doesn't basically whatever he wants. And I know the movie reflects the positions the characters had in the comics; and maybe part of the point is to go against type and have two characters fight opposite what you'd expect, but even with the comics, which I didn't read extensively, I had thought the roles were backwards too.
In the movie, Tony didn't require much convincing to feel bad about something that, if I was paying attention to properly - which I may not have been (see about about attention span) - he didn't actually have anything to do; yet because he's a driving force behind the Avengers, he blames himself for something catastrophic that they did, all the while squandering the use of Alfre Woodard in a bit part (again, I don't recall her ever popping back up in the movie; so rather than getting the Heart and Souls reunion we deserved between her and RDJ, she's just a throw away character to serve as a convenient plot device). And why the hell aren't the Avengers overseen by a larger authority, especially when they're taking actions globally; crossing into other countries and doign God knows what? I didn't feel they gave Cap enough of a case to rebel on; and even, I think, the writers knew that, which is why the muddled his initial motivation of not wanting to sign the accords with protecting Bucky from being unjustly persecuted for something he didn't do; in an overly elaborate plot.
Zemo seemed like a really lame villain - at least in the movie. Anecdotally I believe he's supposed to be better developed in the comics. He really should have just been a guy who wants to watch the world burn. One thought I had towards the end of the movie that might have made it better, is if Zemo had actually turned Tony into his own version of the Winter Solider; using the memory manipulating technology Tony had developed and was showing off at the beginning of the movie to manipulate Tony's mind and brainwash him. It would have made more sense for Tony and Steve to go to such extensive lengths in opposition of each other; and actually give that demonstration scene more meaning than exposition of setting up the death of Tony's parents as an active plot point for the movie.
I also kind of wish we would have seen Cap get shot like he does in the comics. Obviously that would have been an issue going into Infinity Stones and needing an extra plot thread to somehow include his involvement, but something like bringing in a past version of Steve, set from before Civil War, could have then foreshadowed the time travel element of Endgame, without necessarily giving it away - since most people assumed time travel would be involved somehow; yet they chose to utilize it in a different way than most people expected.

I know this is random, but have you ever been so late watching something long after the vast majority of society and then you want to discuss it anyway? Yeah. But doesn't this belong over on the MCU board? I love the theater experience. Giant screen Escape. I work in law enforcement. On top of that, I have lost a lot of people from my life so I love the "remove from society & vanish into another world for a couple hours" thing. Another major difference. High school? Star Wars was my summer prior to senior year. It was SO amazing. People lined up for hours & saw it dozens of times. The fanclub I joined drove 2 hours to the big city to see it in Dolby stero. But not Solo? I think I enjoyed it more, but Han & Chewie were my ticket into Star Wars. I remember when Han left I was "no! He's a good guy!" And then he came back & it was such a "yeehaw! Hooray!!!" moment. Which is where I put the MCU. They have a vibe like westerns. Trouble in the town. Heroes ride in, save the day, then ride off into the sunset. Feel good. Like I said, I get enough real life in my real life. I have had enough family die of muscular dystrophy, heart attack, Alzheimer's, cancer... But you don't get the full impact distracted. I do that all the time with TV, but I do not on the first run. I DVR shows & watch the DVR undistracted because one misses stuff. If a show I've seen is on, I'll do the internet bit, looking up for the good parts I want spoilers because I don't care about that. I looked to see about Han in TFA because I feel ot allows me to absorb the action better. I know what's coming so I can see the acting, etc unfold better. I still bawled my eyes out. They really blew it because the placement ruined the "yeehaw!". When the cheer moment came, we were still too emotional over Han. Your loss. It does suck in so many ways, but we get one of the great Supes bits-the bathtub. I am 59. I read Superboy & Supergirl as a child in the 60s, though I am a Thor & Cap fangirl. I agree with Christopher Reeve that Supes is "a friend" & I curse Snyder for taking him so dark. Supes isn't a god because he doesn't see himself as such. He's a kid from Kansas. The bathtub scene is a flash of the real Supes. I don't watch most of that Youtube crap. I gave up on critics by the time I was a teen in the 70s. I developed a conspiracy theory they somehow knew what I liked so they could pan them. Sci fi/fantasy got little respect so I learned to form my own opinions. I also never look at the rating. G. R. Who cares if the story is well told? Nope. That's not Cap. There was a cartoon in 1966-Marvel Super Heroes. Barely animated. Basically comicbook panels with a shield here or a hammer there flying across the screen. Thor, Cap, Iron Man, Hulk, Namor. I fell in love with Thor & Cap. They are protectors. There's a bit in Dark World where Loki is trying to convince Thor how useless it is to love a human because they don't live long. Thor asks if Jane's death will satisfy him to which Loki replies "satisfaction is not in my nature" Thor responds "Surrender is not in mine" That is Thor. Failure isnt an option. He will protect the person he has sworn to protect. Cap is the same. A protector. Cap & Supes are both products of WWII. My folks are WWII kids so all this dark crap later generations want is not them. They do what's right because that's what they were raised by their family & society of the era to be. Good people. The right thing. So no. Cap embodies the ideal of America, but he's not the American Government. He's what we aspire to be in our best moments. You see a similar attitude in Bucky, another product of WWII who has been brainwashed into something he would never become on his own. That whole process was basically rape. As Widow said about being unmade. You know Cap gave up the identity of Captain America for a brief time, became Nomad because of Watergate. No. I have never much cared for Tony Stark. It's all about him. The reason Coulson had to die was to pull Tony in. Cap respected a warrior's death, but he was fighting because of orders. Thor was in it for Loki. Hulk was in it for Tony. Remember the line about "my stuff"? Don't take my stuff. Coulson was one of those things. He was SHIELD to Tony. No. That was an excuse, but not why. He promised Pepper he would stop how many times? He NEEDED the accords to make him give up being Iron Man because he couldn't stop. He WANTS to be with Pepper, but they don't have a kid until the world was destroyed in Endgame He can't even call Cap after Civil War. He can't get past himself It's the wee hours. (3:21 AM) I'm going back to bed. Probably won't get back until after work so a good 11 hours or so. Sorry. I will say considering this is OT Arrow, I might see why you don't get Cap. I made 1 season of Arrow. Flash, Legends of Tomorrow, Supergirl, Agents of SHIELD are far preferable.

No. That is fine stargazer1682. I have been late watching some movies and TV Shows too and I didn't watch 'Skyfall' until last year when Beccy and I were re-watching the James Bond movies in the box set 'cause I am not a big fan of Daniel Craig's version of James Bond but I enjoyed 'Spectre' 'cause it had Léa Seydoux in it and we will be watching the next one to see Léa again. That being said I agree with a lot of your thoughts about the movie and I wasn't a fan of 'Civil War' and much like 'Batman vs Superman: Dawn of Justice' which come out around the same time and extreme DC and Marvel fans were always fighting about on the old IMDB boards I found both to be kinda dull and boring and some people might disagree with me and are free to but I wasn't really a fan of either of them and felt they could have been so much better.
'Batman vs Superman' was rushed and shouldn't have happened until after they had made a few solo Batman and Superman movies in the DCEU and introduced 'Wonder Woman' in her own movie and aside from wiping Ms Marvel out of the movie which was Ike's sexist decision I think Marvel had waited until after they got all the rights for their characters back 'cause there were so many big name superheroes in the comic books that would have been great to have seen teaming up in a movie together with the others like Wolverine, Storm, Emma Frost, Mr Fantastic, Invisible Woman, Human Torch, Daredevil, Deadpool, Ms Marvel, Blade, Spider-Woman, the Punisher, She Hulk, Jessica Jones, the Prowler, Black Cat, the Silver Surfer, Namor, Squirrel Girl, Silk, Hellcat and Venom. All of those names were in the Civil War story and the Sinister Six were in it too and I think Marvel rushed too far ahead making it and it would have been better if they had waited until later. I will take the 'Ms Marvel: Civil War' graphic novel over the movie but that is me and people are free to disagree. I just found both were majorly lacking and come across as very lifeless.

I know this is random, but have you ever been so late watching something long after the vast majority of society and then you want to discuss it anyway? Realistically it is hard to see every movie & every tv show. I am still working on my DVR. Got to Flash's finale just this week. Still have Supergirl, Rosewell, Supernatural & I need to watch the entire season of GoT. This year has been Glass, Alita, Captain Marvel, Us, Dumbo, Pet Semetary, Shazam, Hellboy, Endgame, John Wick, Aladdin, Godzilla in theater. But obviously one misses a lot. The great thing about the old IMDB was one could chat about everything because they all had boards Maybe because I am old school fantasy, I watch a LOT of the genre. My teen years in the 70s felt like such famine until Star Wars. I've seen most all the DCEU I believe in theater. Not Man of Steel or Green Lantern. Saw Jonah Hex on tv. It's almost like one's duty. I subscribed to Starlog & the like in they day & they preached if we didn't support the films, the studios wouldn't make them. They kept us updated on allthe new shows & what shows the stars were guesting in. It was a lot of work being a fan back then, but fun But if you go the spoiler route, I am confused about the seeing in order... Marvel you can do the particular hero & Avengers. Or you can go the cosmic stuff (Thor, GotG, Dr Strange, Captain Marvel, Ant-Man & Avengers) or the earth crew (Cap, Hulk, Iron Man, Black Panther & Avengers) Or watch them all. Cap defied orders to go deep behind enemy lines to rescue Bucky, the man he sees as his brother. Sure, he saved a bunch of others, but he sought out Bucky. In Avengers he finds the SHIELD weapons when Tony points out its strange how Fury behaves. So no, not the good little soldier. Whedon understood these character in ways the Russos never will. He stated before Avengers came out Stark sees the world as his. If something interests him, it's his such as telling Thor "don't take my stuff" about Loki who is way more Thor's than Tony's. Coulson died to pull Tony in. This is now his family & he wants to protect them. He solves things. He created Ultron because he doesn't want to lose any of his new family fighting baddies. He solves things. But as Cap points out, that doesn't usually work out. As Wanda pointed out to Cap Ultron doesn't see the difference between destroying the world or saving it because that's Stark. And Stark created Ultron which killed Zemo's family & that lady's kid & got the Accord started So no. It IS Tony's fault. So he's The Joker from Dark Knight? But the comics have been through many permutations Want to hear an interesting correlation to your stance this is a bad movie? My sister gave me the dvd of Batman Begins. I like Liam Neeson all the way back to Excalibur. Remember him as the husband who killed Darryl Hannah in High Spirits? I fell asleep watching Batman Begins. Watched it again. Nothing. It was on tv so I watched it Nada. I cannot tell you who Neeson played. Nothing registered Its like my mind will not register anything from that movie. So is it a boring, dull movie? Or just not my cup of tea? It's really a good thing we all like different things, right? I like the character dynamics in Civil War. Zemo is upset about his family, yet he will kill numerous other people to set his plot in motion. I really prefer Black Panther's arc in this one to his own movie. He actually learns something from all of it about how ridiculous revenge is.

Fair enough Stargazer, I disagree myself I actually think the film is really fun, the Cap and Tony stuff works because of what they have been through, Cap believed in the system then in Avengers he finds out SHIELD are making Hydra weapons and hiding it from people, in TWS he finds out SHIELD are infested and corrupted by Hydra, and he handed over an Infinity Stone to them himself because he simply followed orders, they in turn created the Scarlet Witch & Quicksilver because of this, Tony on the other hand acted on impulses and his own feelings and Ultron was brought into existence through this and that creation almost caused an extinction level event, which even in preventing Tony and the others still cost this good kid who just wanted to make the world a little bit better his life.
Tony has no one to blame they had no oversight so their actions are on them alone, he doesn't feel they should be allowed to just do as they please, Tony learning to take responsibility and also learning to not be so selfish is his story through all these films, Cap goes from the naïve kid wanting to serve his country to the weary vet who still believes in doing the right thing but sometimes doesn't know how to do that, Cap's also shown a propensity for believing the worst in Tony sadly, in Avengers he judges Tony based on almost nothing, he doubts Tony's motives and his dedication both of which Tony is vindicated for by the end of the film, in Ultron again he automatically assumes Tony is at fault and he takes the word or Wanda over Tony when Wanda just the day before sent Hulk off into a mystical rage in a populated city because she was in a mood herself, so Cap pushing back on Tony makes sense imo.
The final battle I like because it's not a big sky beam bullshit, it's more drawn in and personal, and both Tony & Cap are fuelled by their emotions, Tony just learning his mother & father were violently murdered by Bucky, that Cap knew and hid is from him for years whilst being a self righteous prick all the time, and Cap the desire to protect his friend whose been the victim of brainwashing and experimentation for over 70 years, who though was the one who killed the Starks wasn't responsible for it due to his brainwashing, having to choose to either protect the man he considers like a brother from his closest other friend despite his dickish behaviour, or stand by and let one try to kill the other, the fact it comes about right after their initial conflict is resolved adding more fuel to all of it.
Personally I never sided with Cap in this I think he's a cunt, this Avengers, and Ultron Cap is just a big POS imo, he's great in TWS and I like him in TFA but in the first 3 team up films he's a right bellend.
Zemo I like though his plan is bullshit given the nature of just how he needs everything to happen exactly as it does, but him using the Avengers own personalities to make them turn on each other was good, though I wish they set up more to make his plan make sense, like Zemo always knew Bucky killed the Starks due to chatter he heard, but what he was after wasn't that knowledge but the proof of it, as in the film it seems like he just knew for no reason, but then if he knew why go to the base when he could just get Bucky to admit to the assassination whilst in custody?
I dunno, sorry you didn't like it though man.

They didn’t want to wait until they had all the characters because there were too many female heroes on the list and having that would have upset the Chesters and their dick worshipping pals who are still recovering from Captain Marvel and Wonder Woman. The audacity of those sjws having women in leading roles in superhero movies. DAMN YOU FEMINISTSBut how many female heroes from that list made it to the screen? 1 Black Widow, 2 Scarlet Witch, 3. Nobody. Wouldn’t want to get ahead of ourselves. 3 would be too much. I’m gonna celebrate Civil War’s inclusion of female heroes by getting me one of these

I realize this thread, arguably more so than the AoS threads I recently posted probably belong more on the MCU board for their topic, but it's not strictly that I want to discuss the movie per se with just anyone, but rather I want to discuss it the misfits on this board; since I'm familiar with their opinions on other topics and am curious what they might have thought of this movie. I'm honestly not a Star Wars fan. I've definitely seen all of the Lucas SW movies at least once; the original trilogy a few times, I haven't really kept track, but I could just never get into them. The irony is, when I found out my brother had never seen any of the Star Wars movies or Indiana Jones movies, I made it a point to get him to watch all of them, if only by virtue of understand a world of pop culture references he otherwise never understood. I wasn't surprised that he liked Indiana Jones; we're both history/mythology nerds and while IJ isn't exactly a documentary, it makes fun use of the material - at least the odd numbered ones do... I was a little surprised he liked Star Wars, especially considering he opted for the linear viewing by starting with Episode 1, rather than starting at where the franchise began with; and then it just snow balled. He's definitely gone to see all of the new movies in the theatre the first week, if not the first day they're released; whereas I've only seen Rogue One out of all of the new movies that Disney has made. Interestingly enough, I rather enjoyed it; I thought it worked very well and I always like a good retroactive story that fits into established lore and even addresses an erstwhile plot hole. Nah, I'm usually pretty good paying attention to what's going on, even when I'm on the computer doing something else; and if I do happen to miss something, that's where I'll grab the remote and skip back to catch it. That's probably another reason I don't go to the theatre often, because even with my singular focus on the movie, I'll still miss something, especially if my mind wanders, but I can't exactly rewind it then. It's also the reason I tend to have the closed captioning on, as there's usually a split second delay in what's been said and what's written on the screen; that if I'm not positive of a piece of dialog I can usually look and see what they said - although I often get a kick out of the fact that the closed caption can regularly be wrong; and I'll feel bad for the people who are more dependent on the closed captioning to be accurate. More often than not, I'd just be bored as hell just sitting watching a movie or show and doing nothing else. It's usually good indication though of the quality of whatever I'm watching if I do find myself paying closer attention to the TV; because that means the writing and acting is such that it's drawn me in, but those shows are few and far between. Agreed. I recently rewatched the first Christopher Reeve Superman movie and I was kind of blown away by how good it still was. I had sort of developed this idea in the back of my mind that it had become dated and less relevant; I think in part as push back to the days of discussing Smallville on the IMDB board and so many people insisting the show in some way or another needing to align with how things were in the fucking movies and it drove me absolutely nuts - especially when, for good God damn reason, they went and killed Jonathan off. It just emboldened all of those people, saying, "See! See! Jonathan died, just like in the movie. We told you it was going to happen!" I was rather disappointed though when I subsequently watched Superman 2... I could have sworn I always liked that one more than the first, but I just don't think it holds up nearly as well. Looking up the behind the scenes drama, part of which I already knew; and the disparity between the Donner approach and the Lester approach is striking. Interestingly enough, I came to find 3 isn't as bad as I would assume it was. It's bad, but it has its moments. If you took out Richard Pryor and reworked to remove the shtick and put Brainiac back in like the original script called for, it might have been pretty good. Hell, Pryor may not have been to bad with the right writing; and maybe instead of being the pawn of the Not-Lex character and instead was an unwitting pawn of Brainaic, it might have worked. 4's premise was weak, but a better writer might have been able to salvage it and make the main antagonist work. To be fair, I wouldn't classify Youtube channels like CinemaSins as "critics" per se; it's more like a reaction video or a humorous way of recapping content. His "sins" are meant to be taken with a grain of salt and generally aren't legitimate grievances of the story; though there times where he vents about genuine frustrations with certain elements. I'll admit, some of thoughts on the movie may be colored by what I think the characters behaviors should be, based on a broad generalized concept of my impressions of who the comic book characters are. I've read far more DC comics than I have Marvel. I've read a few Hulk TPB and a lot of the Ultimate Spider-man comics, but what I know about the likes of Cap or Iron Man or even Thor probably stems more from the movies than anything else; though I don't necessarily take the movies as gospel or the final word on the characters and have invariably looked up how certain things played out in the comics. So I admit I may be wrong who the characters are meant to be, at least from the source material, but I'd still argue that the way movies have set things up, the movie characters don't strictly align with the comics nearly as much as other here are saying. I find myself on the fence as to Cap's character and motivation; because i do get what people are saying about him bucking convention and disobeying orders, but there's something dissonant about the idea of Captain fucking America saying, "No, we don't need to be sanctioned by any government authority; we can just be our own private army comprised of super-humans." My impression of him has always been that of the quintessential, ideal soldier serving the principals of the US; dedicated, loyal - he wouldn't blindly follow orders if they ran afoul of the core principals he had sworn to serve, but it would be in defiance of the person who had betrayed those principals or abused their position; and he would still respect and value the institution and the need for a chain of command. And maybe that's not what Captain America has ever been, but it just seems weird to me if it isn't. Likewise, Tony Stark/Iron Man seems like the polar opposite to Cap; where he does start out as the lone wolf and self-made hero and creates a one-man private army unto himself. Tony became Iron Man and gave himself the authority that power gave him; and he only begrudgingly shared that with the US military (at least in the movies). Otherwise he answered to no one and largely went unchecked and had no problem with that. He then parlays that into taking a more active role with forming and managing the Avengers after SHIELD was diminished and relegated to ABC primetime. Now don't get me wrong, I'm all about playing against type and playing with established conventions. I don't think it's impossible to get these two characters to champion their respective positions in this conflict, I just don't think they did a very good of creating that motivation. So he's The Joker from Dark Knight? No, not strictly so. Just because they said it in the one film, doesn't mean that's the invention of that type of character of phrase. Don't even get me started on the fucking Nolan Batman film.... It was a dull movie. And by that, I mean, it fucking sucked; along with the two follow-ups. I’m gonna celebrate Civil War’s inclusion of female heroes by getting me one of these The shirt or the blonde? Deb doesn't strike me as someone who'd share, but I've been wrong before...

It is honestly harder for a movie to include too many characters. Casts of thousands become face in the crowd. Honestly, was Endgame worth it? They really screwed up. They didn't get Cap or Thor anywhere near right. (Why kill the Warriors Three in 5 minutes in Ragnarok only to turn Thor into Volstagg. We need a 2 minute segment where Dr Strange says "oh, by the way" pulls Volstagg out of Thor & directs him to Valhalla when next we see Thor). They seriously neutered Hulk. Once you get around a dozen characters on screen, someone gets short shrift So, yeah, they were never going to manage comic book story. Comic books can throw a panel into Spiderman of Iron man flying off somewhere with a note to find out what he's up to in Iron Man #5000 or whatever it's up to. TV shows also can manage a larger cast. Film is limited by the length of time an audience will sit in a theater Ultron did a good job of actually putting comic panels onto the screen & it's pretty much reviled. That opening bit of hero-hero-hero-splash page is very comic book. The heroes fighting all the Ultrons is a centerfold. Whedon screwed up getting all his message across. He was trying to paint them all as monsters, but that got garbled. But doesnt it bother you? I take issue with the male image of what equals a superheroine we see so often. So many don't feel like real gals, but a guy's fantasy of a tough gal. It doesn't feel like a real woman. It was my worry about Whedon & Avengers, though his take on the team far outshines the Russos. Buffy always felt like a male fantasy. I preferred Angel's crew. It was a bit of my gripe against Wonder Woman. She was good, yeah, but in other ways, no. I felt Marvel did much better with Carol Danvers. Granted, I really never liked Wonder Woman. Supergirl was the one I liked. Widow is ambiguous. She was trained to be a cipher. Slip in, get the goods, make the kill. "Unmade" was it? She is what the job calls for.

No. That is fine stargazer1682 .
Now, now Debbie. You should know better than this. You are not supposed to talk about that. I’m gonna celebrate Civil War’s inclusion of female heroes by getting me one of these Now, now Debbie. Supergirl was the one I liked. Widow is ambiguous. She was trained to be a cipher. Slip in, get the goods, make the kill. "Unmade" was it? She is what the job calls for. See, that is the problem I have long had with a lot of movies and why I count myself as a comic book fan but not necessarily a comic book movie fan ‘cause the majority of female characters which have been featured in these movies have been very poorly portrayed and they don’t feel like real women either and they mostly only exist as side characters or love interests to male characters to push their along or be a stepping stone to their stories and they are not shown as having much of a life outside of the male character they are tied to and 90 percent of their scenes when they are alone or are with other characters they only talk about them and that is the reason why so many of them have failed the Bechdel Test with representation and it would be one thing if we were in the 70s or 80s but the comic book industry has changed significantly in the past 30 years and we have far more female lead series than we have had before and a lot of them are now written by female writers.
Writers like Gail Simone, Amy Chu, Marguerite Bennett, Blake Northcott, Tini Howard, Marjorie Liu, Caitlin Kittredge, Hope Larson, Kristina Deak-Linsner, Mairghread Scott, Kelly Sue DeConnick, Seanan McGuire, Grace Ellis, Leah Williams, Colleen Doran, Shannon Watters, Noelle Stevenson have all had a lot of success not only taking over existing female lead series but also with their own series and we saw Marjorie Liu make history last year winning Best Writer at the Eisner Awards for ‘Monstress’ and series like ‘Saga’, ‘Paper Girls’, ‘Hack/Slash’ and ‘Rat Queens’ have made the Guinness Book of World Records with ‘Saga’ being the biggest selling new series of the past 20 years. Not to mention up until the series went on break and even after that it has still dominated both DC and Marvel with graphic novel sales and ‘Paper Girls’ has too. DC and Marvel can’t even touch Image Comics with new series and many of the most successful new series have been either female lead or had female writers.
I feel Hollywood has largely failed when it has come to writing female characters in comic book movies and TV Shows and even others genres like Action and Sci Fi to an extent and they are not as good as many of the female comic book writers and female Authors writing the genres. Even male comic book writers have been better at getting it right too and many female comic book writers have said the exact same thing I have said for years – when a male Hollywood writer gets a hold of a female character she is often weakened down and de-powered to make the male characters look strong and TV Shows have been guilty of doing the same thing and the Black Canary is one of the best examples of this – a superhero which is meant to be one of the best martial artists in DC. The Black Canary was awesome under Gail Simone and other writers in the Birds of Prey and Black Canary comic books but on TV she doesn’t even get to do her high flying kick (her signature move) or any of her kicks she is known for doing.
The Black Canary jumps off motorbikes and the top of buildings doing those and takes down dozens of villains at the same time, she has saved the day with broken arms and legs, her Canary Cry is that powerful she constantly has to be careful using it ‘cause it can kill everybody around her very easily and she has used it to take down concrete walls and when aimed at the ground it can propel her into the sky helping her jump onto the roofs of buildings and she has also been shown to fly from time to time in the ‘B.O.P.’ comic books but in ‘Arrow’ Laurel and Dinah could barely kick. I mean they took a character that literally does kicks left, right and centre throughout her comic books and stripped her of it and this is exactly what a lot of adaptions of strong female characters from comic books and novels written under male Hollywood writers have been like.
It is only now we are seeing that change but it has taken a long time for it to happen and that isn’t to say there haven’t been any good adaptions of female characters from comic books in movies and TV shows but by and large most of them have been de-powered or weakened down especially when the male writer puts them with male characters. The other problem is Hollywood has long discriminated against physically strong women and actresses who can fight and we have seen the Rock, Batista, Bill Goldberg, Hulk Hogan and John Cena all get multiple leading roles in movies over the years but when Beth Phoenix retired from WWE and tried acting she got knocked back from the roles she auditioned for ‘cause she was told that she was too intimidating and too muscular – roles that required that but ended up going to smaller and physically weaker actresses.
And this is not the first I have heard of this happening and there are thousands of female athletes and bodybuilders who are trained in martial arts and karate that are better fits for these roles but are turned down by the dozen in favour of actresses who are completely miscast and don’t look like they have ever been in a fight or could throw a punch or kick ‘cause physically strong women make insecure males feel inferior and we see this here in Australia with our female athletes constantly under attack by sexist males on social networking sites being called feminazis and men hating lesbians as insults all 'cause they like to play sports. Hollywood's problem with female comic book characters is their lack of female writers who understand the characters far better than the male writing them on screen and while I am not against male writers writing for female characters and some of my favourite female characters were created by men in 2019 there should be more gender balance like there is in the comic book industry with more female writers like Gail Simone writing for characters like Batgirl and Red Sonja which she has offered to do for both of them on screen.
I tend to find female characters in comic books far more relatable than the male superheroes we have been getting on screen and many of those have been over the top and un-reletable compared to characters like Batgirl and SpiderGwen and with the DCEU and MCU you have had a super soldier from the 40s transported to the 40, the God of Thunder from another realm, a multi-billionaire that spends his millions making himself an iron suit, a scientific genius who transforms into a giant green monster and it is both the DCEU and MCU that are like this and one company isn't more guilty than the other but in the comic books it is a different story and many of the characters in the Bat Family like Batgirl, The Spoiler, Bluebird, Red Robin, Orphan, the Signal, Batwing and even Clayface (In 'Detective Comics Rebirth) are far more realistic and relatable than many of the characters we have had on screen. One of the reasons I have always liked Batgirl more than Batman as Gail shows in her series Batgirl goes home to her apartment covered in cuts and bruises every night and she doesn't have a mansion to live in, a butler to stitch her up and take care of her and somebody to create her costume or gadgets. She does everything herself, she created her own costume and gadgets and struggles to pay her bills every week but she still does it 'cause she knows people need her.

I’m gonna celebrate Civil War’s inclusion of female heroes by getting me one of these The shirt or the blonde? Deb doesn't strike me as someone who'd share, but I've been wrong before... Why do I get the feeling if you wore that shirt Deb would be standing next to you with a devilish grin whilst cosplaying as one of the Marvel's be it Captain, Ms or Mary? Beccy means the shirt and not the blonde and no, I am not one to share and Beccy is mine and I am hers. The blonde is Margot Robbie and I actually didn't recognise her at first until Beccy told me who it was. As for cosplaying if I was going to dress up as a Marvel character specifically Beccy I would probably go for something way sexier like this.

Nailed it. You hit that one out of the park. She swings and she hits and it is a SCORE. This is why #MeToo and #TimesUp are more important now than ever. Men shouldn’t be writing for the female characters and excluding female writers from getting work in the industry but if you work in tinseltown and speak up about that you risk being sexually harassed and raped. Look at this. The CEO of fucking Warner Bros. DC owners was ousted earlier this year after sexual misconduct allegations. www.cnbc.com/2019/03/18/warner-bros-ceo-kevin-tsujihara-ousted-after-sexual-misconduct-allegations.htmlAnd this on Twitter Here's how the Cartoon Network deals w sexual harassment & victimisation: 1)Call meeting. 2) Insert invented evidence into investigation. 3)When woman finds out threaten to sue her if she tells. 4) Cover up showrunner's history of harassment. 5) Discard complaint. #TimesUp THREAD This is messed up shit. Fucking seriously messed up. People want to know why female heroes have been excluded from these movies for so long and this is the answer standing in front of us. These men don’t want female heroes or role models for young girls because they are worried one of these days they are going to harass the wrong woman and she will fight back. The last male that tried to put his hands on me found out what happens when you fuck with the wrong woman.

Personally I never sided with Cap in this I think he's a WAFFLE, this Avengers, and Ultron Cap is just a big POS imo, he's great in TWS and I like him in TFA but in the first 3 team up films he's a right bellend. I dunno, sorry you didn't like it though man. stargazer1682 im just going to add on to dazz's because im lazy and I agree more with this opinion. I think this film didnt mean much to you because you didnt see the other previous films where you see more of the characters journeys and thus not as invested in them. In saying that, this may speak to the effect of a film that is part of a shared universe and not just a stand-alone film. Additionally some of us know the characters from the comics, so theres history with that too. Myself, I enjoyed the film although I did have issues with it. I too, thought the reason was a bit flimsy but simultaneously understood both Cap's and Stark's motivations. I would have preferred, they stayed with the 'original' cause of the rift between Stark and Cap from the comics. That is the superhuman registration act, where superheroes had to register and reveal their identities. This is way more personal and for everyone involved too as they are pretty much jeopardising the lives of not only themselves but friends and family members to potential villain-y and misuse. Im not crazy about Zemo either, it was a good plan although too convenient. Also I wish they ran with his concept design and that he was a leader of an organisation, not just acting alone. Both Barons so far have underwhelmed me. Strucker and this guy, there is no intimidation factor. Even Crossbones im a little disappointed with, passable though. this is his comic design the film concept design

I dunno, sorry you didn't like it though man. stargazer1682 im just going to add on to dazz's because im lazy and I agree more with this opinion. Even Crossbones im a little disappointed with, passable though. this is his comic design the film concept design I've seen all of the preceding Marvel films, with the exception of Thor The Dark World....
