Boxer a smrt , The Boxer and Death (1963) Czechoslovakia/Slovakia Directed by Peter Solan who was inspired by the real life story of Tadeusz Pietrzykowski loosely adapting his incredible story to film. "Teddy" Pietrzykowski was a Polish boxer and armed service soldier, captured by the Germans he was part of the first mass transport to the death camps Auschwitz in June 1940, and was later transferred to Neuengamme in 1943. Perter Solan's excellent film is set in a Nazi concentration camp, Jan Komínek is awaiting execution after an escape attempt, he deflects a punch thrown at his face by the commandant a former prize-fighter, which immediately interests the officer for Kominek displays sharp amateur boxing skills. Life is spared for the moment, the Commandant is excited at the opportunity to practice his own skill and to amuse himself with the inmate in his makeshift gym & ring. Kominek is not in any condition to last out against the fit and well trained Nazi. He is ordered to train and is supplied with nutritional food much to the ire of his fellow inmates. Kominek gradually gains his strength and sharpens his skills, meanwhile the prisoners and some other officers are disturbed by the special attention given... Boxer a smrt is a spellbinding prison/war/sport/biographic a riveting humanist drama. Beautifully bleak composition it is an intense absorbing thriller which never lets up, 2hrs long on a Friday night and not one blink here. With some truly haunting moments inside the prison death camp and along with outstanding performances, this is brilliant cinematic art and Highly Recommended !!

Thanks for the wonderful introduction to this film, mfpx. I'm always amazed at what you see and am very grateful to you for sharing your viewing experiences, enlarging my world in the process, even if I never get to see the films. Thanks as always for you positive feedback spiderwort Sorry to have moved the main review from your "prison film thread", but I felt that such a standout film deserved a thread all of its own. Available on dvd from Slovakia, my rural post office ladies are always amazed at the postmarks stamped on my parcels... Happy Classic Viewing to you...

Hi Planet X,I hope you had a good weekend, and after a slight delay,I decided to follow H-8 with another film from Eastern Europe, which has knocked out The Golden Fern as my FTV of the month. Out of the two I've seen,Boxer is a much more accessible than the more experimental character piece Before This Night Is Over (1966). Not wanting to spoilt things too much here, the way the film opens with Commandant boxing and then "that cut" was so well done, and the psychological horror of the camp can be really felt at being in the back of Kominek's mind in the ring. Going by their reviews on the weekly thread, this is a movie mikef6 and hitchcockthelegend would love.

Hi there MDF It has been a busy working week with not much on-line time , but every night we do get to sit down and enjoy a classic film. Many Thanks !! the joys of classic world cinema … Zlaté kapradí , The Golden Fern (1963) watched last night. Following on only from your captivating still posted here recently and your high rating, I never read in detail reviews before a film, therefore was in for a fabulous surprise. Drawn in from the opening moment totally absorbed into Jirí Weiss's enchanting realm, what a wonderful tale, a beautifully crafted spellbinding magical work of cinematic art. , absolutely loved it !!
