The lone positive is not feeling a need to rush to a showtime.
Otherwise, selecting where you want to sit beforehand can just as easily land you in a row of talkers, idiots, or worse. I guess it's fine because unlike an airplane or sporting event, once the lights dim, you can pretty much sit wherever free seat you want - so long as you're aware that seat selector could show up any time & you gotta go.

For spur-of-the-moment theatrical experiences, yes.

I never heard of that until recently.

I prefer it, no need to turn up early to get the seat you want.

There are annoying issues with it as well at the automated kioks. One time four of us were going to see a movie. One couple went first and selected their seats with seats vacant next to them for the other couple.
When the other couple went to select the two adjoining seats the kiosk denied the transaction as it left a single vacant seat at the end.
Apparently the powers that be assume no one goes to the movies by themselves.
We got the manager over and he said he couldn't do anything to fix the issue outside of the other couple going back outside and getting in line to buy seats that hopefully weren't bought in the meantime.
They ended up just buying seats in the row behind us and since the show wasn't fully sold ended up seating next to us anyway.

I mean I like sitting by myself because it prevents having to seat near someone very annoying.

I like it, if you go by yourself it's not an issue even if you book last minute. If you're going with someone just book in advance. What exactly do you think the downside is? I also don't mind sitting up close so I have yet to find an issue.

Having to adhere to staying in a specific seat A seat you wanted being sold out or unavailable due to gap seating( maybe I don't want to sit next to anyone?).

I guess it depends on the theater my theater the seats are very big and cozy and it doesn't really matter who you're sitting next to

Its good and bad.
I've been experiencing more and more sold out shows recently because of it. The seats at the theatres near me are the reclining ones, so they're bigger, so there are less seats in the theatre, so the assigned sales snap them up quicker. The way to get them is to buy them online farther in advance of the showing. But then you have to pay an extra fee for that too.
On the other I get the seat I want and am locked into it without having to rush to the theatre.
Still doesn't save me waiting on a line though since I have to have that popcorn!
Arrrgh! It is what it is...

why? i love it. what do you not like about it ? what do you like about it. If its a crowded movie at least I know where I will sit and can pick a good seat (or decide to go other day). if its now crowded i know i can sit somewhere else if i want to, and i sometimes do, like you i too sont like to sit next to annoying people or no people at all. best is to sit alone in the row and nobody two ros in feonr of you and two behind you. thats the ideal setting for me.

I can remember there was a standing area at the back of my old theater in my hometown growing up. It was for really popular movies where all the seats got taken, people could lean on this barrier wall.
Assigned seating only seems weird to me at a matinee with only a few people in attendance.

It took some time to get used to, but I like it. It's really useful for couples, families, and groups. The one downside to the policy is that a seat I may want has already been purchased by someone else.

They do it here as well, but the downfall is if you get a person that creates problems next to you, you're going to have to deal with it throughout the movie. I doubt they'd boot somebody if they paid for assigned seating.
I've had to move a few times over the years. Once, a few kids in the back were kicking the row of chairs, and the other was friends wanting to sit in the damn front row.
The only time I could've used assigned seating was in 2007 when there was some remodeling going on. Standing room only.

Well, I used to go to the National Film Theatre a lot when I was young, and all their seats were numbered, and they are at the Curzon where I go a lot now, so it doesn't seem particularly unusual to me.
