I can remember there was a standing area at the back of my old theater in my hometown growing up. It was for really popular movies where all the seats got taken, people could lean on this barrier wall. Assigned seating only seems weird to me at a matinee with only a few people in attendance. Never had to do the standing up shit sounds like a nightmare

True story: I was in the theater waiting for Infinity War to start. It was me my friend and just three other people. One guy was sitting by himself in the middle of the theater, no one near him. A guy then comes in, walks up to him and says "I think you're in my seat." And he wasn't joking. He actually made the guy move. I still laugh about it. It was so god damn ridiculous.

It took some time to get used to, but I like it. It's really useful for couples, families, and groups. The one downside to the policy is that a seat I may want has already been purchased by someone else. Can it not be said that a downside to not reserving your seat is that a seat you may want already has someone sitting in it? I guess I'm just not sure why general admission is fundamentally any different than reserved seating in this context.

It just opens up possibility of disputes so yes its bullshit. It's TRUE, some people really dont understand the seat numbering system.

That happens, but unless you got to call in the big guns, you can just explain that they're in your seat and they should move.

I'm sorry, I must have misunderstood because that sounds like an upside of reserved seating, not a downside.

It can became an aggravation in one case if someone knows they're in the wrong seat and they won't move therefore you have to complain to the staff.

I could see it working if the demand is huge based on opening day/weekend ticket sales. But if I do the whole "I'm catching a movie" going to a random weekday matinee screening, and I'm asked to pick a seat upon the ticket purchase, my first question is going to be something like this: REALLY?

If you complain to the staff, you will get your seat if it's reserved seating. If it's general admission, you would be the problem.

I get the feeling people are just mad because assigned seating makes it harder to discreetly sneak into a movie without paying. That's it, right? Because the complaints in this thread don't make any sense to me. No I genuinely don't like having to be in a situation were I'm forced to sit by a platoon of people. Moviegoing is a private experience which I enjoy alone, I don't care for being forced to sit with others

I hate trying to find my own seat, seeing 5 empty ones, then finding out somone is saving them for their 30 friends. At least with assigned I know where I'll be

There's always a chance u get stuck next to someone If the theatre's empty you can probably move to a different seat, assigned or otherwise. If the theatre's full you'd be stuck next to people regardless.

My local movie theater has recently started doing that, and I personally don't mind it.

I am of two minds about it. I love it at the IMAX where I buy in advance so I can get good seats without having to arrive an hour earlier. On the other hand for ordinary theatres that are not too full, I much prefer choosing my seat once I see in person what is what - are there groups of teenagers, little old ladies who don't shut up, assholes who put their feet up on the seat in front of them, and so on.
