Byzantine (Eastern Roman Empire) - particularly during the reign of Justinian when he just about took back most of Italy and Northern Africa. I also like the later periods (circa 10th Century A.D.) during a rejuvenated period under Nicephoros II Phocas aka "The Pale Death of the Saracens".
I also enjoy reading about the Ancient Egyptian, Hittite, Sumerian, Akkadian, Assyrian and Babylonian empires. Heck, I enjoy just about all pre-16th century history. For some reason I just can't get into the 17th to 18th centuries very much. Then it picks up again in the 19th century to the current day. But the really ancient stuff where there is a lot of mystery around the civilizations is very fascinating. It's amazing to think of ancient Sumerians establishing trade routes all the way to present day Afghanistan to acquire lapis lazuli for instance.

What did the Romans ever do for us?
sanitation, medicine, education, wine, public order, irrigation, roads, a fresh water system, and public health, But most important they gave us fast food Believe he was being coy, sidenote had no idea Caesar saw a therapist at all.
