Widowed, a free-lance illustrator. I worked by contract for Hallmark, Disney and Meade, plus a few smaller companies. In 2000, things went downhill fast. I had to get a 'real' job to support myself and have health insurance. The illustration industry was going completely digital, and I didn't want to re-learn my craft on a computer, so I settled for a lesser job, but with stability.

I was 11 years old at the time. I was going through a lot of changes around that time. I started having my period, skin problems, insecurity issues, and transitioning from 5th to 6th grade. 6th grade was a lot different from 5th grade. This time, I had a homeroom and three teachers for different subjects. It took time for me to get used to switching classrooms for different subjects. I also thought that the work in 6th grade was a bit harder than the work in 5th grade, plus I always thought that my 5th grade teacher was one of the nicest teachers I ever had in school, unlike the ones I had from 6th grade.

For me the 90s was a decade of travel in Europe and across America. 20 years ago marked the last of the European trips. I did not yet have a computer or a cell phone. My dad's Parkinson's had reached the point where he needed daily assistance. So began my first stint as a caregiver which lasted until 2004.

Did you have any help with such a huge task?

I was 10 and in Grade 5. My family had a PC on loan that wouldn't start up properly, and I was the only one that knew how to get it going (I'm being serious here). I loved playing games on it. A kitten came in from the bush and I was raising him (he disappeared 9 years later, I still miss him). I enjoyed singing and reading all sorts of books. The internet sounded like a scary place, since my mother was hearing all sorts of horror stories regarding Chat Rooms, so I wasn't allowed online at all!

My second son was one year old, and I was pretty much taken up with looking after him, he was very energetic and required constant watching to make sure he didn't do something dangerous. small children are bent on self-destruction.
