He could meab rated R for violence. But then again I didn't read the article. It definitely has to be R rated for violence. But knowing Tarantino, he might add other stuff into the film. Then again, it's his film and interpretation of the Star Trek franchise.

I'm just going out on a limb here but its probably has to be hard R because of the violence that Tarantino wants to have in it (I highly doubt he'll use the "N word" at all lol. Context matters here). It could work (a ST film with excessive violence / action). Hell, at this point its really Paramount's last hope . After the borderline disastrous Beyond film, Paramount is running out of answers. And If anyone can give the Star Trek franchise a much needed adrenaline shot...its Quentin fucking Tarantino!
I could see Tarantino directing some amazing dark/gritty action scenes with Captain Kirk killing a bunch of Klingons . Could be dope.

I don't understand why Trek needs to have so many changes done to itself. For decades it has stayed true to itself and succeded in its own way. Around the time of the J.J. Abrams films is where Trek's integrity changed by being more style over substance, becoming dumbed down to appeal to a wider audience, etc. To have Tarantino come along and potentially give it his trademark over the top violence, hard profanity, etc. will only change Trek again and not necessary for the better. I don't want to see Star Trek become a shadow of itself.

Profanity itself doesn't seem like it would fit in with a universe like Star Trek that carries a certain kind of dignity. I don't care about profanity personally, but it seems tonally not in sync with the rest of what I've seen of Star Trek.
The part of the R rating I would enjoy would be that it would be presumably an adult based storyline...which I think is actually very in tune with Star Trek, as it (when it is really shining the hard sci-fi light) asks a bunch of questions about existence. I wouldn't mind seeing it a little more adultly approached. Notice I didn't say gritty. I don't want tons of death and violence, but maybe just a more adult version of a Star Trek episode. If TV episodes got ratings, I think it would be interesting to see at least one that was R rated. If for no other reason that it could take on a concept or question in a way geared specifically for adults. Not straight up shootouts, but something like "Dunkirk" that was visceral without being overly gratuitous...if that makes sense.
Something about the tone of the new movies is a little to blockbustery to me. I would definitely see a QT Star Trek movie that pushed the limits, R rated or not. The new ones aren't bad, but I like my sci-fi a bit more heady. Some of the themes in something like "Ex Machina" (loved it) were adult in nature without being crass. Something like that is what I'm getting at. QT doesn't ever disappoint me as a viewer though, so regardless of the rating, I'd be interested to see what he'd do in this universe.
