Studios at their core are businesses and a lot of the times they go with data over art. I know they said the reworked the ending because of Captain Marvel's similarity, but the Principle Filming Started in June 2017 and ended October 2017 and Captain Marvel Principle Filming Started in January 2018 and ended in July 2018. Now Feige did view the movie so there was some cross pollination but there were also 2 Test Screenings that effected the final product. And for good or ill Studios as Businesses put a lot of stock in Test Screenings. They view it as tangible data. With those 2 test screens www.indiewire.com/2019/06/dark-phoenix-two-movies-original-ending-1202148597/

But I don’t think cutting out or shortening character moments had anything to do with data.

But I don’t think cutting out or shortening character moments had anything to do with data. I think once the 2 test screenings came back and they totally reworked the final act it scared Fox. And they tried to streamline the first 2 acts to match the reworked 3rd act. Add to that moving it twice also scared them and they tried to work what they had into a tight little blockbuster. To do that they cut anything they thought was tangential to the action and plot. That would be smaller character moments. After seeing it I still say it was an average movie. I don't know if the original idea would've worked, but I think starting with his original idea of a grounded character study was the first misstep, but it still might've worked. I think it was a gamble to start there. Pairing that story with that idea. That gamble started a long list of other missteps that lead to this mediocre result. A more established director might've been able to stand up to Studio pressure also.

They did the same thing with X1 but Singer being an experienced director was able to be flexible. Kinberg didn’t seem to know what exactly to do in the same situation. Going from Shi’ar to Skrulls, to nameless aliens, and finally D’Bari. Ever notice how the word “D’Bari” was only said once in the entire film? I think they didn’t have the rights to them since they are technically Avenger characters but Marvel gave them the okay when Disney bought Fox.

And yeah, Fox was panicking and didn’t know what to do with the film according to an insider John Campea knows.

Yeah it did feel like a lot was missing. Yeah, there are a lot of scenes and lines in the trailer that didn’t make it to the final film.
