I've read a lot of excellent books recently, but The People in the Trees by Hanya Yanagihara may be the finest novel I have read from the last ten years or so. Truly extraordinary, surprising, shocking and unforgettable.

The Heart of the Matter by Graham Greene
Although I read a lot of ("lowercase g") great books lately, this is probably the most recent GREAT book.
