I wish they didnt go so overboard with the push for diversity. it goes from everyone being white to Everyone but 3 being non white (out of about 15). Why not, sure, but why directly push for it as a condition and have it be as something good? again from extreme to extreme.
but thats a minor gripe. other than that and the movie being a bit too sappy it is quite entertaining. Emma Thompson is so captivating on screen, Mindy is her usual character (which isneither bad or good just is), the irony being there are no female hosts well performing late night shows, let alone one that would hold for decades.
its a good movie and easy to watch. One or two laughs only but its worth watching for the amazing chemistry between Lithgow and Thompson. They carry the movie across all sapp and overly pushy pc agenda.
7.5/10

How's the humor in it? I noticed the R rating and was like "oh maybe they'll go a little further with this"? Or does it play things comparatively safe?

Yeah, I found Late Night to be "mediocre"—neither bad nor good. In addition to playing one of the female protagonists, Mindy Kaling wrote the script. In terms of topical, political, racial, social, and cultural humor, her writing is razor-sharp—the jokes about abortion and Tom Cruise, for instance, are spot-on and would excel in a late-night comedy club. Indeed, her monologue about Hollywood's ageism toward actresses—delivered by Emma Thompson—brilliantly mocks decades' worth of film industry ridiculousness. But Kaling is also writing a romantic comedy of sorts (although the main relationship is professional and platonic rather than sexual), and here she struggles. The movie is melodramatically clichéd, and the sentimental score that ties together various transitions only makes matters worse. Plus, the film features too many static camera setups and drab, flat lighting, making for a sometimes-shabby visual experience, kind of like watching a PBS movie.
If Kaling could have found a cowriter to help her with the structural elements, along with a better director, Late Night could have been good.

His character is initially likable and rather sexy, but is ultimately revealed to be a somewhat sleazy cad. Reid Scott is allowed to display his range in a strong supporting part (spoiler: he's also the male romantic lead). Max Casella is a delight as a gruff, cynical un PC veteran writer who is actually a truly sweet-hearted and caring man. So no, these actors are not wasted. They are well cast, and deliver the goods.

what did you like so much about it? The good performances, the smart humour and the fact that it's not as predictable as it seems. KATHERINE is harsh, but her goal is always to make her employees do a better job (it's more clear when she tells MOLLY that dumping her emotions on her boss won't make things better (I'm paraphrasing)); not be mean for the sake of it (like MIRANDA PRIESTLY). Don't get me wrong. I like THE DEVIL WEARS PRADA, but this movie is a good example on how to take a type of story we've seen before and adding enough elements to make it its own thing. Not to mention that avoiding villainazing is always a sign of good writing, especially in a story about everyday workplace.

I like Thompson, but the trailer made the films humor look forced and I could see pc agenda written all over it so gave it a miss. As I indicated earlier, some of the humor is outstanding—and, while liberal enough, it is more cutting and ironic than "politically correct." But for the reasons that I noted, the overall film does not work nearly as well as the trailer might have suggested.
