Elvira's "come hither" look is a lot more appealing than Amy Irving's. Amy was cute, but she does not exactly have sex appeal. She appears to aiming for something ghoulish here. Elvira is a sex bomb and she is awesome. Your "come hither" tops mine! Come hither into my bossom child!
Yes, Elvira's ability to see humor in all situations, would pip Irving's intensity and fury here and douse it with sardonic glee. Who could resist, one would have to be stone. Elvira would cast the demon right out and into herself and then f<>k with its libido.....
As well mounted as The Fury was for its time, it was perhaps a story better left on the page—I didn't read—and it is not as focused or as intimate as De Palma's Carrie. Plus the novel wasn't half as popular as King's Carrie at the time. The story was quite convoluted in fact, that is why I don't like Blow Out much either. For his thrillers, De Palma brought that intimacy back with Dressed To Kill and Body Double.
Yeah, Elvira is a sure fire cure for what ails you! She can take XXX and turn it into something that's somewhere between "PG - 13" and "R". She definitely hits the right spots. She is the ideal woman for sure. "The Fury" is quite convoluted, though I do like it. And it is unfocused. But it seemed like De Palma got carried away with his own style. I do like it better than "Blow Out", which is strangely bland. It is a good role for what Amy Irving can do well, though I do like how you compare Amy's intensity (somewhat adolescent, perhaps?) as being no match for Elvira's good-natured humor+sexuality. My favorite parts of "The Fury" are the score, the best friend La Rue (played by likable Melody Thomas, who played a sweet camp counselor in "Piranha"), the scene where Kirk Douglas is bonding with Mother Knuckles (that is surely a genuine Chicago apartment there!) and the terribly sweet and vulnerable Carrie Snodgrass. I must be just about her only fan. I loved her voice, I loved her laugh. But I never hear anybody say they are a Carrie Snodgrass fan.

I must be just about her only fan. I loved her voice, I loved her laugh. But I never hear anybody say they are a Carrie Snodgrass fan. I am a Snodgress fan Mr. Dirty. No-one else like her and she spiced up every movie she was in. Under-used and under-appreciated. If every movie had Tyrrell and Snodgress in it, they would be all keepers.
I thought that Mother Knuckles sequence was a bit silly and belonged in another movie. I have never really warmed to Douglas as an actor, never found him sexually appealing though I can see his charismatic appeal. He always seemed too forced.
With the success of Carrie, they went all out with The Fury budget wise, even getting a score composition by Williams. Pity it didn't end up greater than the sum of its parts. But yes, I would rather watch The Fury than Blow Out. Allen has to give one of the worst performances in a big budget movie ever.
The reason for my liking the Mother Knuckles sequence is maybe a little but unusual. I just love that apartment. I don't know why. It seems cozy and cluttered and full of secrets. And it is a very realistic looking apartment and it looks like it's downtown. Also the way they mention MASH just gives a little realism. It's no big thing, but I do like the scene. However, I agree with you about Kirk Douglas. I don't care for his personality and he tries way too hard to bring on the macho. It's off-putting. I like his son so much better. The awful-ness of Allen's performance in BO cannot be accounted for. How did De Palma let that happen? She's obviously capable of doing much better. Did she trust him too much and allow herself to be demeaned? Because it's really kind of humiliating to see her up there doing such a bad job. btw, have you ever seen "The Attic", Toasted Cheese? It's a low-budget psychological drama from 1980 with Carrie Snodgrass and Ray Milland. It is very good, extremely unusual.
