You know I really liked Shelby. Trek writers seem to struggle with writing women, but Shelby was great. Apparently there was some doubt as to whether Patrick Stewart wanted to continue with the show, and this episode was designed to let him be killed off. The show would have continued with Riker as Captain and Shelby as his XO. Whilst I love Picard, I often wonder what the show would have been like if it had carried on like that.

We never saw Shelby again after "The Best of Both Worlds, Part 2" on TNG or any of the other shows but we most certainly heard about her (on "DEEP SPACE NINE").
She eventually became Captain of the Nebula-Class Starship "USS Sutherland".

Actually there's some argument about that. Shelby is a major character in the novel Vendetta and the New Frontier series. Pocket books got the Trek producers to let them use the character; in return the producers promised that they would never use Shelby on the show again, so as not to contradict the novels. Then a Shelby got mentioned on DS9 because they straight up forgot that the name was reserved. Pocket books complained, and the producers said that we should all just consider that to be a different Shelby. Starfleet is a big organisation, there's bound to be name replication all over the place. There's a New Frontier book that even mentions that there's another Shelby in Starfleet who is a different person. Here's a character bio of her including the books.
