My dad is in the hospital with a major stroke (happened Monday) and just had brain surgery, so... My life is pretty upended. This is his second stroke and at the moment he's paralyzed on his left and can do little more than squeeze his right hand, wiggle his right foot and gesture non-verbally (though, apparently, he just opened his eyes slightly again). They did just remove the breathing tube and now he's breathing on his own as of today. All day at the hospital with my mom and half-siblings. I've been watching a few episodes as familiar comfort food at the end of the day lately to help fall asleep. So sorry to hear about your Dad. I will offer up a prayer for him. Take care.

Two nights ago: I Only Have Eyes for You. Last night: Offspring. Tonight, I plan to watch Quickening and Lullaby (I hope). I love this arc and one of my favorites. My favorites of season 2 are actually Reunion and Reprise, but Darla and The Trial both rate highly. Season 3's pregnant Darla and Wesley betrayal arcs are actually my favorites in the whole show, though. Though, I'm also one of those rare people who love the Angel/Connor story. The Bangel(us) arc is forever my #1, though. I did watch Surprise fairly recently. Buffy: I Robot...You Jane Angel: The Shroud of Rahmon
I know I Robot...You Jane is generally considered one of the worst episodes of S1 (maybe even the series), and while I agree that it is not my favorite, it is very relevant today. I was amazed at the message of the problems of technology that the writers wrote about before the internet and social media became mainstream and how what they were saying is kind of what we are dealing with now, despite the older technology in the show. The episode seems slow to me, but I love that Jenny is introduced and her butting heads with Giles is great. And she makes some good arguments for the benefits of technology, even though I agree with Giles about preferring books.
I am planning on watching the Angel S3 Darla pregnant arc too, Nile! That one and the Wesley betrayal arc are also my favorite's of S3. Pregnant Darla was not only funny but so emotional and beautiful that every time I watch Lullaby I get sad and happy all at the same time because while it's sad that it's the end of a wonderful character, she basically achieves her redemption which was totally unexpected. I remember Julie Benz saying in the Darla featurette that people who hated Darla were even moved by it.
I love the Wesley betrayal arc too; to watch his isolation and then the act of betrayal, and the aftermath...just what Wes goes through in those 3 episodes and then his fallout and eventual comeback, is, again, something not expected for his character, and I loved it. Alexis did a fabulous job of transforming from the bumbling Wes to the deeper more serious Wes, yet still keeping it realistically in character.
Darla and The Trial are my 2 top episodes of S2, followed by Reunion and Dear Boy, but Reprise and Epiphany are right up there too.
I, too, am one of the rare people who loves the Angel/Conner story. I never hated Conner, I always felt sorry for him. He is constantly being used and manipulated, so I can't blame him for his attitude and actions. Now, I don't like Conner's thing with evil Cordy/Jasmine in S4, but I did like Angel and Conner in S4, how it was resolved, and then his reintroduction in S5.
I am so sorry to hear about your father, Nile! I will also pray for him and your family. I hope he gets better.

'Chosen' when I re-watched the entire series on DVD a few years ago. I am going to re-watch it again after I have finished re-watching 'Alias', 'Lost Girl' and 'Fringe' on DVD.

Buffy: Nightmares Angel: Offspring
@deblovesbec I love Alias too! I rewatch it almost as much as I rewatch Angel and Buffy. It is probably my third favorite TV show drama after Angel and Buffy.

I know I Robot...You Jane is generally considered one of the worst episodes of S1 (maybe even the series)
Is it? I didn’t know that. I always considered it one of the ‘better’ episodes of Season 1 (I thought ‘Teacher’s Pet’ was probably the ‘worst’). Then again, I oftentimes seem to disagree with the 'majority's opinion' on things (there are episodes I like others don’t and ones I dislike that others love).
I love that Jenny is introduced and her butting heads with Giles is great. And she makes some good arguments for the benefits of technology, even though I agree with Giles about preferring books.
They integrated Miss Calendar into the group so well. She really felt like part of the gang by the end of Season 1. I loved her interaction with Giles and their relationship.
I am planning on watching the Angel S3 Darla pregnant arc too, Nile! That one and the Wesley betrayal arc are also my favorite's of S3.
I liked parts of those two arcs. It’s just that some of the episodes that were included in those arcs are my least favourite episodes of the season (‘Dad’, ‘Provider’, and ‘Loyalty’)...but I like/don’t mind the rest of the season.
what Wes goes through in those 3 episodes and then his fallout and eventual comeback, is, again, something not expected for his character, and I loved it. Alexis did a fabulous job of transforming from the bumbling Wes to the deeper more serious Wes, yet still keeping it realistically in character.
I thought it was the best thing to happen to the character...though maybe not from his perspective (one could understand him not seeing it that way), but it terms of character development, other than Angel, he’s probably the one who went through the biggest change (if you don’t count Fred becoming Illyria).
Darla and The Trial are my 2 top episodes of S2, followed by Reunion and Dear Boy, but Reprise and Epiphany are right up there too.
I, too, am one of the rare people who loves the Angel/Conner story. I never hated Conner, I always felt sorry for him. Now, I don't like Conner's thing with evil Cordy/Jasmine in S4, but I did like Angel and Conner in S4, how it was resolved, and then his reintroduction in S5.
I’m one of those people too. I never ‘hated’ him. Sure, he annoyed me at times (but then I was super annoyed with Dawn on BtVS most of the time). I did sympathise with Connor constantly being lied to, plus the way he was raised by Holtz (and the environment in which he was brought up) no doubt largely contributed to how he turned out. It’s a shame they didn’t allow Connor to have really any 'comedic’ moments (I think one rare instance was when he was trying to make vamp faces in the mirror, the other was when he sang ‘Mandy’ with Angel – although both were under Jasmine’s whammy at the time), but obviously the type of character he was didn’t really allow for that.
This was why it was such a welcome development/relief - the way he was during Season 5. We got to see how Connor would’ve turned out had he been raised in a normal loving family. Speaking of, the Season 4 final ‘Home’ is probably the one AtS episode that really got to me – what Angel does for his son, I thought, was super emotional, and I loved how the ending came around full circle to the Season 4 premiere, with Angel hallucinating everyone in the gang (even Wesley) toasting to family at the dinner table.
'Alias', 'Lost Girl' and 'Fringe' on DVD.
I’ve watched all those shows too. Lost Girl was the closest I felt I came to a substitute for BtVS.
I’m sorry to hear about your father, NileQT87. My deepest sympathies.

My father died 3 days (May 9) before my 30th birthday (May 12). He was 75 and had been in a steep decline. Suffice to say, my mom and I are going through a lot.
But it's good to take my mind off of things for a little while in the midst of a massive mess of things to figure out and do. The escapism helps bring a little joy when there's hardly any.

Both buffy and angel are running up here on some channel called t&e (don't know what it is it's in free preview right now) Last Buffy I watched was Becoming II. It's running in some weird order because it jumps seasons. The last one they played was Angel. Needless to say, my DVR is busy recording... (and yes, I have both series on DVD)

Buffy: Nightmares Angel: Offspring
@deblovesbec I love Alias too! I rewatch it almost as much as I rewatch Angel and Buffy. It is probably my third favorite TV show drama after Angel and Buffy. That's awesome. I think Alias is very underrated show. It was very popular here in Australia when when it first aired on Channel 7 and is one of the most successful female lead Action TV shows of all time but it sadly doesn't get as many people re-watching it as Buffy.

Prophecy Girl. I watched all seasons of Buffy and Angel, and then I watched season 1 of Buffy again. I will probably have next Buffy/Angel marathon in 2019.

Buffy: Prophecy Girl and Fool for Love Angel: Heartthrob
Prophecy Girls was great as usual. While I love Fool for Love, my only real complaint of the episode is when Willow, Xander, and Anya go on patrol with Riley and act like the have never been out on patrol before. I understand it was for comedy, but it made them look kind of idiotic, especially when they have actually patrolled Sunnydale before without Buffy and did a pretty good job (at least Willow and Xander have). I really like in Heartthrob that the show acknowledged Buffy's death; not only that but stretched it out for the whole episode instead of just mentioning it once and then brushing it aside.
@chalice_Of_Evil I agree with most of what you said Chalice, except that I do like the episodes Dad and Provider. I understand that they may not be people's favorites (in fact I have read that Provider is one of fans least favorite episodes, lol) and not very deep episodes, but I enjoy the comedy aspects of them and how different Angel is in them both. In Dad we get to see Angel in a completely different situation that we never thought we would see him in, caring for a baby, and I love that. Provider is a welcome (to me) comic relief episode before we get into the heavy arc of Wesley's betrayal. I like seeing the gang actually deal with clients (lots of them!) and helping people...back to the basics, and it showcases the gang working together with all of their skill sets (I know Couplet is the comic episode before the Wesley betrayal arc, but it is not my favorite episode ). Loyalty is not one of my favorite episodes either. I had always read that I Robot...You Jane was one of the worst Buffy episodes for fans according to threads where it was asked to share your favorite, least favorite episodes, etc. But yes, I agree Teacher's Pet is an unpopular episode (for me as well), and I have seen it, too, on those kinds of lists (along with Beer Bad and Where the Wild Things Are).
Jenny was integrated so well by the end of Buffy S1 and worked very well in S2. I am really sad that she was killed off (even though I understand the reasons plot wise) because she added a lot to Giles' character (not that he needed it until S4, lol). She had her own special skill set that added to the group dynamic as well as her gypsy clan's history with Angel; she also provided the gang with another adult to sort of mentor them.
I also absolutely love Home as well, Chalice! It is such a beautiful episode and you're right in that it comes full circle. Now, I am not a crier and have never cried over AtS or BtVS, but the episode always gets me feeling emotional in the best way...just like when I first saw it even after all this time. Love it! The gang taking over W&H was a curve ball that I will admit is weird, but they were able to have it make sense and, for me, the episode is a welcome end to S4 after the Jasmine arc, and a good set up for S5.
Yes, I agree that Wes betraying Angel was the best thing that happened to his character, not that he needed it but it was done so well (and unexpectedly) it felt organic and gave him wonderful character development. The only thing is I feel it kind of stopped in the middle of S5 after Fred turned into Illyria. After that, Wes was really just grieving over Fred and did almost nothing else...this may have come off better had Angel had a S6 and Wesley was able to come out of his grieving and develop more after everything that happened at the end of S5.
NileQT87 I am so sorry about your father, Nile! My deepest sympathies, thoughts, and prayers for you and your mom.
@deblovesbec Yes, Alias is very underrated and I wish it would re-air like so many other shows do.

I felt this^ happened from time to time with situations (and certain characters) in the show – that continuity would be sacrificed for the sake of comedy. Then there were occasions where it was clear the writer of an episode just hadn’t done their research on what had come before (especially in later seasons). It’s weird, because in many other instances, the show was really good with continuity and remembered things you’d have thought they would’ve forgotten about.
I’m afraid there wasn’t anything in ‘Dad’ or ‘Provider’ that I liked, not even the ‘comedy’ aspects. Strangely, I didn’t mind ‘Couplet’. But it's all good. Different tastes and all that.

I totally respected the show for going through with what they did...though I feel they were left scrambling for a character to fill the gap left by her after her death. What could’ve maybe made it slightly easier to recover from the loss of her character in the show is if they’d had another female character already established who could’ve been brought more into the spotlight after Miss Calendar was written off. I guess Joyce ended up being that.
Now, I am not a crier and have never cried over AtS or BtVS, but the episode always gets me feeling emotional in the best way...just like when I first saw it even after all this time. Love it!
Same. I’ve never shed a tear during either show, but watching the end of ‘Home’ with Angel walking off got me pretty close.

I think after the loss of Fred, Wesley didn't seem like he was ever going to fully recover...if at all. It was odd how in the series final he told Illyria that he didn't plan to die...when I personally felt that he probably accepted his death and a part of him may have even welcomed it (despite the fact that Illyria-as-Fred telling him they'd be together was a 'lie' - it was a lie Wesley was willing to hear as he died). I think if not for Wesley's line to her earlier in the episode, it'd be easy to accept that he somewhat welcomed his death. I feel like Joss may have thrown that line in just to mess with viewers and make them wonder (as was often the case, it felt like).

I love Fool for love. I cringe at the patrolling as well. Maybe they were being intentionally loud to get Riley killed? The other interesting thing about this episode is that while Buffy "pokes them with a wooden stick", Riley throws in a hand grenade. Military man through and through. He uses a grenade again in As you were.

Buffy: Band Candy Angel: That Vision Thing
Band Candy just makes me laugh; especially Giles, Joyce, and Snyder! Loved seeing Ethan, Mr. Trick, and the Mayor in the same episode. The only problem I have with it is the Willow/Xander romance. They are hurting Oz and Cordelia and it ultimately goes no where. I understand that it was to start separating Cordy from the group so she could go off onto Angel's show, but still...I think they could have not had the random Willow/Xander romance when both were happy with other people...earlier in the series it could have worked.
That Vision Thing is one of my favorite "regular"/Monster of the Week Angel episodes because it has the whole gang involved, even Fred and Lorne. It brings up the issue of the toll the visions are having on Cordelia (not to mention setting up events for the episodes Billy and Birthday) and I love the idea of Lilah getting to Angel through Cordy; speaking of Lilah, I always love seeing her rattled by Angel every once in a while, lol. The theme(?) in the episode: it's not about winning against evil it's about what's at stake, is a gray area I like that they explored a bit. Loved the comedy and drama of the episode.

I feel like Joss may have thrown that line in just to mess with viewers and make them wonder (as was often the case, it felt like). ^Yep. I'm a stickler for continuity, and it is one of my pet peeves when it is messed up, especially in TV shows; you see it all the time. What, the writers can't remember what they wrote in the previous season? I think it should be mandatory for at least the writers and showrunner(s) to re-watch the previous season (if not all of the previous seasons) before they start writing the new season lol. .
Yes, I agree. Joyce did fill that role perfectly in S3, but then she faded to the background in S4, as did Giles to a degree.
Again, I agree. That is why I do not agree with the show killing off Fred and turning her into Illyria, at least at that point. While it provided an opportunity for Amy to show her acting chops and served to raise the stakes of the show, it stunted Wesley's character development, because, as you said, after Fred died Wes did seem like he would never recover. He was such an integral part of the team, and after his reincorporation into the group in S4, it felt off to sort of isolate him again, especially after losing Cordy earlier in the season. I feel that Wesley (and Cordelia) had more of their stories to tell. I would have loved to see Wes and Cordy get closer later on in S5 and deal with the consequences of Jasmine and running WR&H and how that conflicts with the PTB. Also, exploring Wesley's relationship with his father would've been great to see, and they could have gotten into whether or not Wesley would have helped get the Watcher's Council reformed. So many interesting things to explore.
Also Chalice, a little of topic, but I see that your avatar is Dany from Game of Thrones. I like GoT too! Can't wait for the new season...though Angel and Buffy will always be my favorite TV shows.
mmexis Yep. Fool for Love is one of my absolute favorite episodes! Lol at them trying to get Riley killed, but hey, while unlikely still possible. Riley is definitely a military man through and through.

The one with Amy Adams as Tara's cousin where they tried to take Tara home with them.
After everyone says the family will have to go through every one of them to take Tara away, Spike rattles off:
"Not me. I don't care what happens."
He was hilarious.

Buffy: Dopplegangland Angel: Spin the Bottle
Dopplegangland is probably my favorite Buffy episode. It has a good concept, it has almost all of the main cast, as well as Wesley, Faith, The Mayor, and even Anya! It never fails to make me laugh yet has a great small(?) element of seriousness to it. It also moves the overall season 3 plot forward and acts as a great follow up episode to The Wish, while still being a mostly stand alone episode. I could ramble on and on about it, but suffice it to say I love every single minute of it!
Spin the Bottle is also an episode that never fails to make me laugh...I feel like I have already talked about this episode, lol. But it is a great parallel to the Buffy episode Tabula Rasa. It was a welcome relief in a pretty dark season, and I love the fact that we got to see all of the characters as teenagers (Charisma and Alexis got to go back to their early Buffy days, and it was awesome!). Like Dopplegangland, it pushes the season 4 plot forward, while still conceivably being a stand alone episode. And we have the added bonus of the truly unique aspect of Lorne narrating/talking to the bar crowd throughout the episode. All in all, again I could talk about this episode forever, but it is great; one of my absolute favorites!

'Dopplegangland' is one of my Top 10 episodes of BtVS, it's my favourite episode of Season 3 and quite possibly my favourite episode of the whole show. I could ramble on and on about it, but suffice it to say I love every single minute of it!I agree wholeheartedly. I could do the same. Perhaps if there's ever a thread specifically about the episode, I might go into detail about why I love it so much, but what you said basically sums up my thoughts on it. 'Spin the Bottle' is one of my Top 10 episodes of AtS and one of my two favourites from Season 4. All in all, again I could talk about this episode forever, but it is great; one of my absolute favorites!Once again I agree completely. I did type up a review for the episode on the AtS board back when IMDB was still going. Should a thread be started here regarding the episode, I might post my review in that (as it's a rather lengthy review).

Spiral and weight of the world I'm amazed at how much humour there is in spiral. So much patter scattered throughout - oral and visual. "wait, is there some relationship between Ben and Glory??" (from weight of the world) and one of my favourite visuals:

Too funny. I'd forgotten how beaten the Scoobies were in those two episodes. Fighting Glory and an army of knights left them at probably their lowest point post-battle since Angel had Drusilla raid the library to kidnap Giles.

I am 2 episodes away of finishing off season one 1996-97 for the first time. I first started to follow the show back in spring/summer of 2002 when it seemed to be making a "comeback" on norwegian television, after they decided to take it off the air for a year or more, but the fans got their reward and I think I have only seen season 4 (might 5) and up to the last one that aired in october of 2003. Anyway, I found all the seasons on DVD a while back, and have had great fun of watching the first seasons (most of it), might come back here to do a little mini-review of each episode and the season as a whole.
I guess the reason to why I have not posted here earlier, is that I do not want to get "spoiled" too much by reading other peoples reviews of the earlier episodes/seasons which I have not seen, yet but still I am glad there is a place to discuss the show.

Agreed on both counts, ag25. Yes, I have a lot more to say about both, Chalice, but I agree that it should probably be in it's own thread, lol. We should do that at some point. Right now, I am re-watching season 2, so that is keeping me mostly busy.
Spin the Bottle is in my top 2 episodes of Angel Season 4 too. What is you other favorite? Mine is Orpheus.
