It's odd, as I thought it was really well done when I saw it on the big screen. But, seeing it in Youtube videos, and re-watching it last night, it just gets worse and worse. Tarkin's consistent. It's just weird that the Leia effect looks worse with every viewing....

This, seeing the droids and the constant mentioning of the Force are the worst bits.

I still like the movie. It's just CGI Leia that doesn't hold up....

She's just in that single shot at the end, right? I've not seen the flick again since the initial viewing but will keep an eye out. What about her isn't holding up? The shot just "looks fake"?
Conversely you think the effects work on Tarkin holds up throughout? Interesting.

Yes, jarringly so, and I don't remember it looking that way the first time I saw it. Conversely you think the effects work on Tarkin holds up throughout? Interesting. Well, I can tell it's CGI. What I'm saying is that effect looks the same to me on repeat viewings as it did the first time. For some reason, Leia looks worse. Maybe it's me just looking too hard....

No, I agree, there's definitely a different level of quality between the two...it's a jarring difference, for me, as well.

Well, now I want to watch it just to see what all the fuss is about! Of course, now I'll be paying super close attention to both characters. FWIW, Jan, I could tell Tarkin was CGI too but it was good enough that I was willing to "play along."
I wonder whether they'll touch up the Leia effect if they release a director's cut or extended edition. My guess is not, but...
edit: Upon reflection, the only thing I can come up with is maybe they just spent way less time/money/effort on that last shot because it's essentially static, whereas Tarkin was a dynamic character who walked around, talked, etc. in a few different scenes. Not justifying the disparity, but that's the only explanation I can come up with for what you two describe as a stark drop in quality, and frankly I'm inclined to believe both of you.

A character that we know is CGI in a...Star Wars movie?! You don't say?! In all seriousness, it looks fine to me. I honestly don't know how much better they can make her look. We all know right from the start that the character is CGI because we all know what Carrie Fisher looked when they made Rogue One. It's hard for the mind to suspend disbelief then. The same goes for Tarkin.

It's whens he moves, and when she talks, it 'seems' more unnatural when compared to Tarkin.

They used actress Ingvild Deila. While she isn't Carrie Fisher and her mannerisms won't be exact to a young Carrie 40 years ago, it's a real person underneath it all. Here's a side by side comparison:

Leia looks worse and more artificial upon repeat viewings. It's odd, because my initial impression after my fist viewing was that CGI Leia was done better than Tarkin. After my last viewing, I think it's a lot worse.

I thought it looked bad on the first viewing. And I'm not normally too critical of CGI.

I hear ya. Her head looks a little too big for some reason- or too wide. considering it was all CGI superimposed on an actor, they did a fairly okay jobTarkin CGI looked more convincing most of the time. A lot of the scenes I couldnt even tell he was still dead.

But (for me) it hasn't progressively gotten worse with each viewing. It just got more noticeable at one point and now it's just there and about the same from now on. As far as seeing it on things like YouTube, I'm not surprised it looks worse because all video does on sources like that IMO. For me I found it to be high quality CGI, but that's when it comes to her upper face (from about the nose on up). The real problem is the lower face. The mouth when speaking, but especially the jawline. It looks oddly fake, like an animated mannequin or something. CGI Tarkin was better. CGI is progressively getting better but it still has it's limitations.

I finally saw the movie this weekend and a lady behind us kept saying how beautiful Carrie Fisher was and how well done her make up was. I almost laughed because she's the first person I've heard of who thought it was really Leia. So I guess at least one person thought it was a real person. Tarkin looked pretty good except for a shot here and there but overall he was pretty cool.

Place called The Village 8 in Tulsa, Oklahoma. It's a second run theater and there was a pretty good crowd at the showing. It's a nice place to catch a movie if you don't mind waiting. And the popcorn is quite good.

jeez, I kinda wish basement dwelling a-holes like you would stop to always judge women by their looks. And of course the male guy is beyond reproach again! If Leia was a guy you manbabies would gush like schoolgirls how badass he is.
Why can't you let Leia age gracefully, even CGI Leia??? You sexist manbabies make me sick!!
