And religious folk who insist that atheists are secretly religious when the going gets tough. We should assume many of them are so fascinated by us simply because they can’t comprehend belief and/or faith. Idiocy can be momentarily fascinating to watch in action, just as any type of aberrant behavior can be momentarily fascinating to watch. But the average atheist is far too intelligent to be captivated by it for long. However, you do have a point in suggesting that there's some level of interest amongst us in just how beings whose knuckles aren't, at least theoretically, dragging the ground can continue on in their belief and worship of a Grand Sky Fairy who's never shown the least degree of evidence for his existence. Of course, I realize that the term 'faith' is interchangeable amongst you guys for the term 'slack-jawed, gawp-mouthed credulity', but still... [its best not to discuss average intelligence. After all there has never been a time you have been more intelligent then me and there are scores of additional dumb atheists on the board.

Nope. By definition it can't be. Yup.
By definition... it's not defined as such:
"I don't believe that any gods exist" is a statement of one's beliefs... This shit really ain't that complicated. Any statement about the deliberate supernatural must be a belief by definition since it is impossible to know anything about the transcendental for sure other than it is something commonly considered by mankind. But one can lack belief in a god without necessarily affirming its lack of existence as the two things are not contingent - although for some hard atheists they often follow on. Or, to put it another way, one can be atheist without expressing any beliefs about an alleged deity.

Atheism is a religion like theism is a religion. Is theism a religion?

Atheism is a religion like theism is a religion. Is theism a religion? Sure. There are plenty of people who believe in a universal creator.. without ever really defining or "knowing" what that creator is.

But does that make theism a religion as in "the belief in and worship of a superhuman controlling power, especially a personal God or gods." Is it automatically assumed that if they believe in a universal creator that they are worshiping it?

Is it automatically assumed that if they believe in a universal creator that they are worshiping it? I guess one doesn't have to worship a creator... Tho.. just recognizing one as existing and appreciating the job it did could be viewed as a form of worship. Who knows? All I know is that when you're filling out some form or survey and you get to the " Religion:____" question... "Atheist" is an acceptable answer.

or just attention seeking whores
it's beginning to look a lot like the mary magdalene syndrome is not just a syndrome but a full-time occupation here and in every other nation where propping up a religion is considered a worthwhile occupation and whoring one's mind out to a god the equivalent of a very long hibernation where once you wake up you still have no idea who put their where with all deep inside all your frustrations.

Religion: none
Closest I got to believing in anything was when I thought this universe was set into motion by some disinterested entity quintillions of years ago, and this galaxy and its timeline were but a blip in its own existence and ultracosmically more space. It was long gone on to whatever else, and it, too, may have been a blip in some other being's timeline.

I can't think of a question which would, strictly speaking, count as a statement. However we all know of people who, subjectively considered, 'make a statement' in a much looser sense by indirect means (eg criticising the actions of a dictator 'makes a statement' about a person's concern pver human rights ).

There are plenty of people who believe in a universal creator.. without ever really defining or "knowing" what that creator is. This is true enough: the originator of everything can be thought as either a permanent provocative natural force or deliberate supernatural entity, each discerned as a necessity. Or, there is no logical reason why the Universe cannot be eternal through a cycle of infinite rebirths (for instance). At this level of things I don't see any way of ever knowing which is the way things are for sure - although at least we know the natural exists while the way it works at the most elemental level is becoming clearer.

Certainly putting atheist provides useful information depending what the questionnaire if for. It probably actually tells the questioner that the person has no religion.

It’s not society at large since this board doesn’t really represent that. I’ve seen it on reddit too but I don’t visit their atheism board too often.

If it's synonymous with Christianity, then...it's Christianity and that is definitely a religion. Strict theism without contending the god one believes in is the God represented by Jesus Christ or any other religion's god or gods and where the person doesn't worship/praise/pray to, or in any way attempt to spiritually interact with such god(s) wouldn't seem like a religion to me.

I find it hard to imagine atheism, by itself, to be a religion. It's not that I mind be associated with a religion. In fact, I would contend that atheism is part of my worldview, and I would liken my worldview to a religion. It amounts to default naturalism in that AFAIK, there is nothing and need be nothing but nature/natural existence. I believe that natural existence is the basis/source/origin of every thing that is... at least everything that I am aware of. And I have faith that natural existence is probably the origin of everything that I could ever become aware of in the future.
