Not a first role but a role for an established actor. Whether it was just for money or a bad career choice.
Stephen Baldwin in Loving the Bad Man OK now granted Stephen Baldwin is not the most respected actor but he had to have see that appearing in a film that basically says rape easily forgeable and that a rape victim should befriend their rapist is not a good choice if film. No kidding the protagonist in this film is a rapist. Seriously how did this shit even get made let alone get a Baldwin to star in it.
Morgan Freeman in Guilty by Association With a whopping 2.5 on IMDB how did a generic low budget gangster film get Morgan Freeman to star? Granted he is not the main character but its really odd to see a direct to video low budget film with Morgan Freeman.
Eric Roberts in The Human Centipede 3 I know Eric Roberts will do basically any film he is asked to but I find it odd he said yes to a ass to mouth prison film.
Robert Loggia and Charles Durning in The Life Zone I dont know what this horrible film was going for but its pretty much a propaganda horror film where the heros of the film kidnap pregnant women and force them not to have abortions. Its a sleazy as a film can get. Seeing Robert Loggia and Charles Durning here is just sad.
Robert Loggia and Charles Durning in Scavenger Killers Again did these guys get blackmailed or something? Another really sleazy "torture porn" film.
Nicolas Cage in Left Behind I know Mr. Cage had some bad money issues but there is no excuse for an oscar winner to be in a film this poorly made and this horribly written. It was just depressing to see Nic in this trash. There had to be other films to do.

Chris Evans in Snowpiercer. Not that Snowpiercer isn’t a worthy enough film...I just didn’t expect Evans to be in it since I hadn’t heard about it until well after release. Half the movie I kept thinking that guy looks just like Chris Evans it’s uncanny.

I was surprised Gary Oldman followed up Harry Potter and TDK with a thankless role in a cheap PG-13 ghost movie marketed around a girl's panties.

Roy Scheider in Dracula III: Legacy (2005). I know he was having serious health issues which might have made it more difficult for him to get roles (and allegedly had made himself persona non grata in H'wood over the Seaquest debacle), but this is real bottom of the barrel direct-to-video crap. I hate to think he needed the money that badly.

It was brave of the makers of U.S. Marshals to cast Robert Downey Jr. in the role of John Royce given that he was struggling with major addiction issues at the time the picture was made.

Also its odd he was in Citizen Verdict with Jerry Springier.

After Wicker Man we shouldn't be surprised to see Nic Cage in anything. Even if the film is bad (like The Wicker Man is) Cage is usually still fun to watch. With Left Behind you can tell he knew he was in a shit film.

With Left Behind you can tell he knew he was in a shit film. How about Drive Angry? It's a garbage movie and what the hell was that about and what the hell was I doing watching it and what the... Oh yeah. That's right. It's about hell. No wonder why it was so bad because hell is a bad place to be and to come from and to return to. To answer your OP, it's when an actor is in an important, poignant movie and then I see him in something that is very different and the total opposite. Two examples. Don Cheadle in Hotel Rwanda then I see him in one of the crappy Ocean's sequels. So he goes from a very heavy and very serious role based on one of the most grim and serious events of recent times back to doing something stupid. Keanu Reeves in My Own Private Idaho then I see him going back to doing really bad and stupid movies after he was in this awesome art house flick.

I suppose as the medical bills were mounting, he must have needed to work where he could get it. Likely few studios would have agreed to insure him by then, so I guess dreck like this was what he was often stuck with. Sad close to an otherwise top-drawer career.

He wanted to do a serious underwater science show and then decided to go to an alien planet.
Completely understandable he would be pissed about the change in concept. And despite the fact I think Michael Ironside was a good replacement.
Movie 43...I wonder if actors were blackmailed into that one. Incredible that so many name people would be in that unless they had no idea what they signed up for.

Most people tend not to agree with me, but I do suspect Spielberg had a hand in helping to sabotage Scheider's career after he went public with his complaints about SeaQuest. Failing health wouldn't have helped, but to me it's just too coincidental that his career began to tank almost immediately after that fracas. Movie 43...it's like Area 51, in that I have no explanation for what the hell was going on there.
