You'd think that SEE YOU YESTERDAY was a wacky comedy based on the title, the poster, the time travel premise, the GHOSTBUSTERS-like gadgets and a certain cameo. However, it's also a drama about racist police brutality. I'm not saying you can't tackle this with humour, but you have to do it satirically, something Spike Lee (who produced this movie) knows a lot about. Every comedic moment in this movie is... well, something general. It's not something tied directly into this subject. The tone is so uneven (even the style of visuals and music changes depending on the scene) that every jokes ends up feeling out of place and even kind of tasteless. To be fair, I'm not sure a true satire of this topic would sit well with viewers. There are examples (like the FAMILY GUY episode PETER GRIFFIN: HUSBAND, FATHER... BROTHER? and (to a lesser extent) the SOUTH PARK episode THE JEFFERSONS), but they were made before the Black Lives Matter changed people's perspectives. All of that aside, it's not a very original plot. There are a couple of odd camera work choices (particularly the 1st time the protagonists travel back in time). The performances aren't bad, but they're not good enough to save this mess. 3/10 ------------------------------------- You can read comments of other movies in my blog.
