From my experience here on this board, I have found the general consensus of The Last Jedi to be mixed to negative, particularly in regards to its portrayal of Luke Skywalker. Something that has been discussed ad nauseum both here and everywhere else on the internet. As such, I want to preface this post by acknowledging that it is both "preaching to the choir" and "beating a dead horse". Still, it is something that I would like to get off my chest.
Back in 2017, the video game Star Wars: Battlefront II(EA) was released to widespread controversy and middling reviews. However, one small part that was well received by fans was it's depiction of Luke Skywalker, who appears in one level of the game assisting an Imperial trooper in finding a hidden vault of the recently vanquished Emperor.
Here is a video of the level in question:(minor spoilers)
If you read through the comments section you'll see many people praising the portrayal of Luke, with many singling out his final line of "A choice to be better". Which I think perfectly sums up how people see Luke Skywalker and why they were upset with The Last Jedi. It is because he was an aspirational figure who encouraged people "to be better". Which is something people hold onto especially when they are growing up. Thus seeing that he became a disillusioned failure was viewed as the antithesis of what the character was for a lot of people(myself included). Such a story arc might have worked with Han because his character was meant to be a relatable one, not aspirational. But not Luke, he was a optimistic idealist, not a pessimistic realist.
Across the internet I have seen people make some decent defenses of how The Last Jedi utilized the character. Both in regards to how it fits into Luke's journey and how the character could reasonably reach the point that he did. But even if I grant all those points, I do maintain that the character was used against his purpose. Which I feel has been well demonstrated by this one level in a video game that itself, got a lot of derision.(though mainly for DLC practices)
Maybe I am overanalyzing the situation, but that I just what I have gathered from these two pieces of media and the fan's reaction to them. If you have any thoughts on the matter, I would like to hear them.

I hated his portrayal in BFII. They obviously were trying to make him Captain America-esque and it’s so bad.

I hated his portrayal in BFII. They obviously were trying to make him Captain America-esque and it’s so bad. I'll take that every time over his portrayal in TLJ. Even given his backstory it was still horrible. What they did to Luke would be like: after Kylo ran off to the Darkside and Han divorced Leia, Han became a librarian on Coruscant who walked around shushing people all day. It's ridiculous!
