January closed with 110.5 million tickets sold, more than 9 million fewer than the previous January, although a decent performance overall. Let's see if LEGO Batman, John Wick 2, and Fifty Shades Darker can carry February 2017's admissions past last February's

I'm not sure if it will. February 2016 grossed $799 million.
So far they've grossed $589 million in February 2017. It'd need an average of $26.4 million per day over the next 8 days to top last year. However last year they only made an average of $18 million per day over the same time period.
February also had an extra day last year.
As far as ticket sales go it seems even less likely.

Overall, by 2010s standards, January was soild if unspectacular.

Looks like February grossed $24 million less than last February.

February's final numbers are in and the ticket tally is 89.7, which is 2.6 million fewer than last year. Not too bad considering it didn't have anything close to a Deadpool type of hit and having one less day. 2017's sale count as of February 28 sits at 200.3 million.
In the previous decade, it wasn't uncommon for February to exceed 100 million in ticket sales. But as I previously mentioned on the IMDb board, people don't go to movies quite as much in the 2010s as they did in the 2000s, so I'm going to judge by this decade's average tally, which is 89.5 with 2012 bringing the only February in this decade to pass the century mark. Basically the same story as January: not great, but not terrible either.
As expected, the trio of sequels released on the second weekend led the way. The winner was The LEGO Batman Movie bringing in 135.5 million with Fifty Shades Darker coming second at 105.2 million and John Wick: Chapter Two, which tallied 76.7 million, finishing third.
In March, we have Logan, Kong, and Beauty and the Beast as the major releases. I've heard some suggest it will be the biggest March ever. Well I don't know about that, but it certainly looks to be one of the best.

Well March has certainly been outstanding to say the least. It's behaved more like a summer month, outselling the previous May and June.

March is a tremendous success! Four movies grossed over 100 million during the month (one of them being a February holdover) and for the first time, the month of March crossed the billion mark. I don't have any pre-2000 data on me at the moment, so I don't know if it's the biggest March in terms of ticket sales. But I do know it has the new 21st century record, with 134.9 admissions, surpassing the 132.2 million in 2002. It definitely behaved more like a summer month, stronger than the previous May or June.
After March 31, ticket sales sat at 335.2 million, 13.4 million more than the same point last year. I expect April to be a much quieter month, with Fate of the Furious being the only major release.

April performed well, selling 91.7 million tickets, a little more than last year. March holdovers made up for lackluster performances of the majority of April releases.
2017 stands at 420.6 million admissions after four months, roughly 8 million more than this point 1 year ago. Pretty good considering 2016 had four 300-million films released by April while this year has seen only one so far.
Now we approach the summer season, which will be a big test. 2016 got off to a stronger start than 2015, then utterly collapsed during the summer months, from which it never recovered and it ultimately sold less tickets at the end. Will 2017 suffer the same fate? Let's wait and see.

Alien: Covenant might open higher than Neighbors 2 and The Angry Birds Movie combined. At the very least, May not be nearly as awful as it was a year ago

Looks like May is on track to perform even worse than last year. Looks like we're in for another weak summer for the box office

July looks to be pretty good with Spiderman, War of the Planet of the Apes, and Dunkirk coming out in successive weeks. Do you happen to know what those three movies are tracking at?

Not sure about June. I expect Wonder Woman to be strong and maybe the Mummy will overperform. But Cars 3 and Transformers 5? Not really sure what to think. July does look strong. In addition to the movies you mentioned, Despicable Me 3 opens on the last day of June, so it will be making the bulk of its income in July. August looks underwhelming, so July might end up being this summer's lone bright spot. But we'll just have to wait and see

Damn, this month has been just awful. It might finish below the century mark. And I thought May 2016 was bad

May finishes with a pathetic tally of 94.7 million admissions, 14 million less than last year (which was also terrible) and 2017 currently sits at 515.5 million ticket sales and has fallen slightly behind 2016 at this point.
This is the first time since 1995 that May failed to cross the century mark.

An awful May is followed by an awful June. The first June of the 21st century that failed to sell 120 million tickets and the weakest performance by the sixth month since 1997.
2017 has now fallen behind each of the last five years. Yes, even the awful 2014.

The movie I longed the most for was teh sequel of Promtheus...but it became an utterly stupid monster movie and I didn't even bother to watch it.
The other things I'm waiting for is the next season of Game of Thrones...let us see: Big screen or TV, which one brings it really on, where is quality, innovation and facinating story telling with new ideas, approaches and ways...
GHist of the Shell - said to be a bomb - was the only movie I really liked for its stunning visuals...and the story was more than ok. But else...I'd love to go more often to the theatre, but it needed stuff that is worth the money spent on it. There is nothing: sequels, re-images. We have now the fourth Sipderman-version coming! Hiw many actor have played Superman or Batman...and there is no canon in these new Hollywood franchises, means: actions have no consequences and writers don't have to think in the long-term. Lazy writing has become the new normal.

I said July would probably be the summer's bright spot. But even that didn't happen.
135.5 million tickets sold, second worst of the 21st century after 2014. Just barely more than how many were sold in March.
Unless the holiday season is really strong 2017 has a good chance to finish with fewer admissions than 2014 did.
