I'm referencing, of course, the 1949 Disney Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad. [I'm going to talk specifically about the "Legend of Sleepy Hollow" part, which I prefer, but, if you want to talk about the Mr. Toad part, go at it!] What does everyone think about this one?
I still watch it every autumn: it is perfect for the crispness of the leaves and the sense of Hallowe'en right around the corner. (And, yes, I know that, at least on the side of the Equator, I'm writing this post at the opposite time of the year!) I think it's beautifully done, brilliantly animated by Disney's always-excellent artists and amusingly narrated by an ebullient Bing Crosby. It truly represents the essence of Hallowe'en to me--and I saw it in 4th Grade (with a wonderful teacher who showed us the Twilight Zone, had us read newspapers and analyze news stories, let me teach for 20 mins. each day for a week about Greek mythology, and showed us how to shoot craps--yes, really!), when I was too old to be scared of it per se. Even so, I found it great then, and I find it great now.

It was one of the few animated cartoons that really scared me. Still does!

And it's a delightful scare at that, misstique! By the way, anyone else have any thoughts on this one? Or should I have held off posting about it until a more apt season?

Halloween does seem a more fitting season.

You're right, of course, PreachCaleb. I only posted it now because other posters were also writing of Hallowe'en-time movies and receiving responses, even now, and because someone else wrote a post about another version of the old Sleepy Hollow story. But, of course, I'm sure few people are thinking about this one right now. It is still one of my favorites, though.

I, too, love it. It was one of, if not the, first cartoon to ever really scare me as a kid. The Sleepy Hollow portion made such an impact, I don't really recall much about the Mr. Toad section, to the point where I'm not sure I've ever even actually seen it.

PreachCaleb, I know I've seen the Mr. Toad section some time, but I'm with you: I can't for the life of me remember much of it! (And most of that memory, in turn, is not from the cartoon but rather from the theme park ride!) Thanks for posting!

It's my favorite adaptation of the book. It's a little disappointing that they downplayed the ambiguous ending, but it's still great.

Thanks for responding, filmfan95 ! I'm quite fond of Tim Burton's wildly unfaithful version (it and Ed Wood are my two favorites of his films), but I agree that this may just be the best adaptation. A question, though: what do you mean by its downplaying the story's ambiguous ending? The cartoon ends by suggesting there is no real Headless Horseman—as, if I'm remembering correctly, does Irving's tale. EDIT: filmfan95? You there?

I absolutely love it! I haven't seen it in years and wish I could find it on DVD somewhere so that I could watch it every Halloween. Totally agree with your assessment of it. It's a small masterpiece.

It's a small masterpiece. Y'know, Taylor--let me express my admiration for your name and avatar too!--I've got the best memory of watching it in 4th Grade with the whole class. Small masterpiece indeed. As for availability... It used to be on YouTube in its entirety, where I was happy to find and watch it last Hallowe'en, but I think the copyright folks have gotten to it by now. I don't know where else you can find it, but I hope to find a place too before autumn comes around again!

This was not my introduction to the story about Ichabod and the Headless Horseman, that was a Halloween episode of Scooby Doo, anybody see that one, with Scooby Dumb?
Anyway, I likely wouldn't have seen this if not for the original 1982 Disney Halloween Treat, a 40 minute compilation of creepy moments from the Mickey Mouse cartoons and the full length Disney animated movies, it wrapped up the end with the Halloween party scene of Legend of Sleepy Hollow and Ichabod's fated ride with the Headless Horseman. To be perfectly honest, everything leading up to the party segment, it's good but it's the ending we all tune in for I think. And I love the song.
and from that I found these versions.

While both the book and the cartoon suggest that there was no Headless Horseman, the cartoon seems to downplay this quite a bit by making the Horseman feel more threatening than he would be if he really was just a man in disguise. One could argue that it's just an exaggeration, because it is a cartoon after all. But something tells me that the cartoon was trying to suggest more that there actually is some headless ghost wandering through the woods, though there is still no confirmation of this in the end.

Well, the right season for this is fast approaching... Especially since I like to start off the Halloween season in September, there are just so many good things to watch, you can't cram it all in one month.

I love TLOSH segment of the movie. It was released on DVD several years ago, and I picked it up then. I usually watch it once a year. I don't care for the Mr. Toad segment so I usually skip that. The Real Ghostbusters cartoon did a story called the "Headless Motorcyclist" which was a sequel to TLOSH story... It featured the horsemen, now as a biker, terrorizing Ichabod's decendant who was living in a city. The Ghostbusters had to bust the ghost... I will unusually watch this story after Disney's TLOSH. Everyone, Have a safe, but SCARY Halloween!

taylorfirst1 There's a lot that I wish Disney Channel would show around Hallowe'en--especially, y'know, Disney stuff (including this). But they're so devoted to their jejune but money-making kids' shows... Oh, well. I remember when they used to show classic movies and great old Disney shows ( Davy Crockett, Zorro, etc.). Even when they went into telefilms, some of them weren't so bad ( Halloweentown, Now You See It...); if I'm not mistaken, one of them served as a sequel to Huck Finn, presuming that kids would have read the original book or at least known the plot well. Nowadays, a TV movie wouldn't touch that subject with a ten-foot pole. Sic transit, I suppose.
