Incredible movie. Never miss it when it shows up on Turner. I also have the DVD. Fine performances all around, but Sinatra holds it all together. Nail-biting suspense, and Angela Lansbury is a mega-bitch! Highly recommended!

One of my favorite films. I have watched it over and over. Check out the message board for the film at IMDb while it is still there. Some very interesting discussions.

Good question! I do know that Sinatra had a financial stake in The Manchurian Candidate, and he had it pulled from distribution after the Kennedy assassination. So, it obviously hit a little too close to home.

As for the acting, Harvey is superb (as always), Sinatra acts the amateur he was (sorry), but Lansbury was absolutely unforgettable. It's a very original and very heavy story (read the book, too), scary enough to be a horror story. It was withheld from release because of the JFK assassination which occurred shortly beforehand and the story's political nature.

What's the one sequence uncomfortably depressing to you? The beginning, with the fake garden club meeting? Or when he kills his girlfriend and her father?

The latter; it is very disturbing to me especially since he doesn't really know what he's doing and the victims are loving people who trust him and cannot understand. It's just too sad for me to watch so I don't. I couldn't believe it the first time I saw it and have never gotten over it.

I know. It's horrific. The Raymond Shaw character was doomed from the beginning.

I need to correct two statements made by gottaluvafriend. First, the film was not withheld from release. Second, Kennedy was assassinated more than a year after the film came out.

First, see the following... emanuellevy.com/review/manchurian-candidate-1962-the-politics-of-release-and-re-release-4/...which addresses why I posted what I did. Second, while I appreciate being "corrected" I appreciate even more being corrected courteously. Lesson: when posting, everyone, including llanwydd, had better post very carefully from now on.

note to gottaluvafriend:
You are the one who is not being courteous. How could you possibly take offense to what I wrote? And you think "better post carefully from now on" is courteous? Sounds more like a threat. Go fck yourself.
