Overall (so far) I think financially this has been a good summer at the box office. Yeah, there have been some bombs/underperformers, but truthfully those numbers could have been easily predicted. Godzilla and Dark Phoenix were both part of franchises that showed dwindling returns in previous additions. It's no shock that neither of the most recent incarcerations did well. Then you have Men in Black, which for me was gonna be an obvious flop without Will Smith. The only surprise underperformer, for me, was Secret Life of Pets 2. This first one did well, so I'm not exactly sure why only the first sequel underperformed? But only one anomaly this season isn't something to get too too worried about. Really the ultimate problem is the studios think if they do any type of sequel/remake it should do well, but really it comes down to the specific redo and if the audiences out there are interested. They need to learn how to mix it up more. Look at something like John Wick. That started off small and is now become a big franchise. So I think instead of doing all redos, the studios should try more "original" ideas with smaller budgets, that can be built into franchises. This is opposed to making all sequels/remakes for like 200 million each.

The last part I especially agree; not everything has to be ballooned to an Avengers sized budget.
