www.boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=furious8.htmIn comparison Furious 7 had a 190M these figures are of course without marketing. Personally I'm not surprised by Fate's budget as most of the stars probably got a pay raise and Theron probably got at least 10-12M possibly more. Also the numbers of visual effects is costly, and judging by the trailers there is plenty of that. Even if this one groses 300-400M less than Furious 7 it's still a win for Universal. I can't wait to see how it does at the box office.

People are going to get sick of these movies soon. Time for the more character driven spinoffs.

Just wait until it grosses over a billion, then you can't say people are going to "get sick of these movies".

Hitting a billion would mean they made up that loss somewhere else in the world. F8 is expected to take a massive hit opening weekend compared to F7(domestically). A drop of around 40 million. That means by the end of its run, it could see a decline of 100 million or more domestically. It is true overseas will more than make up for that, but it is worrisome. The Pirates of the Caribbean did the same exact thing and had to go on hiatus for many years. Transformers is seeing the same thing as well.

Universal knew when they released Furious 7 it was going to benefit (sad to say) by Walkers death. So lets say Fate of the Furious makes 250M domestic, yes a 100M loss but that is expected. NO tracking thus far has said it would do Furious 7 business domestically. Now internationally whatever it loses in the states your right will be made up by foreign markets, this isn't a bad sign.

My point was clear. You can still say people are getting tired of the movies if this one hits a billion. Transformers and Pirates of the Caribbean prove that. And I understand people seeing F7 for Paul Walker, but I think that was only part of the reason it exploded.

It's unlikely Pirates 5 will gross a billion but very possible for Transformers 5. What other reason do you suggest made people come out and see Furious 7? At best it was at the franchises peak. Going forward if we see a a consistent 200-250M domestic gross and a crap ton overseas I do not see this as a dying franchise. Nor do I think it is worrisome.

It will gross millions from just its name alone. The studio can sink however much money it wants into and still make a profit.

Relying on overseas numbers alone will only take you so far before from a business standpoint you have to step back and look at the big picture. If these films were holding a steady budget in the range of 100 to 150 million, then there wouldn't be a need to worry, but this cost 250 million to make, and that appears it will hold or go up from here on out.
The Pirates franchise did the same exact thing, and had to take a hiatus. Transformers in my opinion will do the same thing here shortly because the newest Transformers film is coming after part 4 opened up with exactly 100 million and fell fairly hard from there, making just over 100 million less than Part 3. We will see in June if that dip continues, if it does look for Paramount to either look at a new crew, or give it a rest.

Relying on overseas numbers alone will only take you so far before from a business standpoint you have to step back and look at the big picture. Tell that to Avatar (the ratio is insane), Mission: Impossible, The Hobbit films, Transformers, X-Men (staring with DOFP), Fantastic Beasts/Harry Potter, Pacific Rim, heck I can even see Pirates 5 breaking even thanks to China. Fact is 90% of movies rely on overseas growth which at the moment isn't showing signs of slowing down (it's pretty much in a stable position). The "big picture" is worldwide gross, there isn't a studio exec in all of Hollywood worrying about where the profits come from, its just as long as they profit huge, they're happy.

It's making more than enough overseas to compensate for falling short of its budget domestically

Well, it had the biggest opening weekend of all time in my country, so it looks like people are not really tired of this franchise
