I came across an article listing the 100 most popular cheeses in the world. I will post the link later, but for now let's see who can guess what the top 10 are. Not sure what the criteria was for the selections, if just sales volume (probably not) or popularity among connoisseurs or an opinion poll among the general public.
Anyway,I would say that seven of them are pretty safe choices, and one is probably going to be a bit controversial. Let's have your guesses, and no cheating!

American FAKE Only 3 out of 10. Here are some hints: All but one of the ten are of European origin. Four countries have one entry in the top ten, one country has two, and another one has four.

I bet key words would be "the world" -parmigiano -mozzarella -ricotta -feta -brie -blue -camembert -gruyere -cheddar -another Italian-perhaps pecorino, or asiago

Sweetpea, that's a pretty good list. And, I wouldn't be surprised if Italy is the country with 4 cheeses among the most popular. However, my guess is that "blue" is too general, and entries would be specifically Roquefort (France), Gorgonzola (Italy) and Stilton (UK).

Okay, let me try. I am certain that number one has to be cheddar. I have to agree that both bleu and American are sketchy but I will put them on the list.
01. Cheddar 02. Swiss 03. American 04. Cottage 05. Cream 06. Mozzarella 07. Parmesan 08. Provolone 09. Bleu 10. Paneer

WHICH three?

You are right about Italy being the country with four entries (parmesan, mozzarella and ricotta being among them) and France the one with two (which are indeed brie and camembert).

There are lots of American cheeses on the complete list (I am not sure just 'American' is one of them though) but none on the top 10.

Not bad! Six out of ten. Surprisingly, Switzerland is not represented on the list.

Right on both counts, although there is a cheese that is sold just with the name "blue" which is neither roquefort nor gorgonzola nor stilton. I guess it's generic blue cheese.

You're probably right. And, I'm reminded that I've seen "Danish Blue Cheese," in the markets.

As promised, here is the link to the full article. Don't worry, it's not one of those clickbait sites where you have to click through 100 pages to see all 100 entries - it's just three pages (100-51, 50-11 and 10-1). www.tasteatlas.com/100-most-popular-cheeses-in-the-worldThere is no explanation of the criteria, so don't ask me what "popular" means in this case! As for the top 10, here they are in descending order: Paneer Camembert Gorgonzola Gouda Brie Parmesan Ricotta Cheddar Feta Mozzarella
I can certainly see how their choice of #1 could be justified, but #2 seems a suspiciously high position for feta .
