284. Smith rescued a pathetic Australian batting display. We might see before the end of play whether the Australian bowlers will make a game of it. I wouldn't be sure of England even if they are 150-0.

Australia's day and by no small margin. The injury to Anderson and further psychological trauma inflicted by Smith. England are going to need bat bloody well tomorrow to still be in the game and, again, if I'm England I don't want my batting to have to be setting up the game. Imagine the pressure on Root tomorrow if a wicket goes early and he comes in out of position needing to try and match Smith's innings! Not looking good for England.

England need 74 to avoid the follow on... Pessimism at it finest there. Aren’t you a West Country lad ? That’s Northern logic if I’ve ever heard it.

More important figure for England is 384, which is about what they need to compensate Anderson's absence and having to bat last on a pitch that will likely be pretty friendly to Lyon's bowling.
I think most important thing for the series is that England's bats stand up. If they get rolled for 150 with Root scoring 60 odd then their dead in the water, and Broad and Woakes will be back in bowling already knackered. Whatever England do in this batting innings, they still need to be doing it at stumps and they need to get to 325 at least.

If England get 300 I will be surprised, though Pigeon McGrath and Harmison have absolutely called it right, this is a new ball pitch, ride that out and it's a good batting track. It's very tantalising though if England can get up to par with the Oz score, yes they have to bat last but if they are not chasing an unobtainable total they do have destructive batsmen to take Lyon on.

I hope he does well.

Well, this needs to be a big partnership. Burns is in and Root is THE wicket for Oz.

Well, this needs to be a big partnership. Burns is in and Root is THE wicket for Oz. Two wickets and England could be in trouble of losing the series itself. My 3-2 prediction in favour of England assumed a good chance of England getting the first one.

And Root had one hit the off stump, popped the bail out and it fell back in. Umpire thought he'd nicked it and gave him out but it was overturned on review.

Burns didn't have a 50 in his last 15 FC innings and gets one that could turn very crucial.

1-101. Definitely the start England needed. They'd have taken that in a heartbeat at the start of play.
