The 70s were such an amazing time for creative output. I picked MTM.
"Rhoda" was not very good, but Valerie Harper's likeability was the draw.
I never watched MASH. I thought "The Jeffersons" was dumb and loud. I liked all the other shows. "Laverne and Shirley" was probably my second favorite after MTM, which for me is beyond reproach.

Yeah, okay, that's true. Can you pick top five? 1. The Mary Tyler Moore Show 2. Laverne and Shirley 3, Sanford and Son 4. Three's Company 5. All in the Family I'm having trouble cutting it down beyond eight! Lol Wasn't that a great time for tv? I didn't like "The Jeffersons" strictly because of George. He was a jerk! Mean to everybody. Archie was not too bright in some ways, but he had a lovability factor that George was totally lacking. Mother Jefferson was extremely funny and I loved Florence. Tom and Helen Willis were annoying. So was Lionel and his wife, forgot her name. I liked Louise pretty well. But I could not stand George! I have tried to watch MASH, and I get that there is a certain high quality of the show, but it just never made me laugh. The humor belonged to another generation, I feel. My grandpa loved MASH. He also loved "Barney Miller", a 70s sitcom that I forgot to put down. MASH never made me laugh once. I didn't dislike it. I just could not respond to it. As much as I wanted to. "The Bob Newhart Show" was a somewhat mild experience for me. But it had all likeable characters and it was well done. Particularly the two ladies, Suzanne Pleshette and Marcia Wallace. "Good Times" was quite powerful when John Amos was on the show. Maybe my vote for best tv dad ever. I loved James. The show got a little silly and lame after he died. "Happy Days" was pure nostalgia. Sweet and innocent. "The Carol Burnett Show" is stellar. Who doesn't love Carol? The skits were the best of the best. Eunice!!! "Three's Company" was kind of dumb itself. But I liked all the five original characters so much. Jack and Janet and Chrissy (loved Suzanne Somers! what a comedic talent she had!), Mr. Roper and my very favorite, Mrs. Roper! I loved Mrs. Roper! I would have loved to hang out with her. What a load of fun she was! Redd Foxx was a comic genius. His sparring with Aunt Esther was hilarious. Also loved Rollo. Lamont was kind of a dork. And maybe the best theme song ever, to add a point. L&S had wonderful, warm chemistry. It was such a cute show. Perfect for children. I think I may even prefer it to "I Love Lucy". "The Mary Tyler Moore Show" is my favorite show of all time. The show built and built on a rare thing called integrity and by the third season it was sublime. These were the most real characters ever. The humor was based on the gentle observation of human foibles. (The 7th season I disregard. It tried too hard wrapping things up and went off rails.) For six years, not a false note.

There's not a single show on your list that I didn't like. There's at least eight that I love, so yeah, it really was a great time for sitcoms.

My vote was for MASH, mainly for its first three seasons, which were hilarious, it becomes harder and harder to stomach when Frank Burns leaves and takes the show's sense of humor with him
All in the Family was close, it was some amazing tv and managed to make a bigot its most endearing character. Or at least second to Edith. I found her too nice to be believed.
Sanford and Son, Carol Burnett Show, Bob Newhart, Mary Tyler Moore Show, The Jeffersons, Rhoda, Taxi - the long list of tv shows I have only seen a few scenes of so I can't say one way or another, though I have been tempted a few times to pick them up on dvd, especially Mary Tyler Moore
Good Times - I have seen several episodes of this series and thought it was quite funny
Happy Days - first two seasons are good fun, the third is its best (Henry Winkler steals the show) but then it starts getting near the 'jump the shark' moment and it becomes absolutely awful after that, you can tick off the things they will do on each show, it becomes sad
Laverne and Shirley - I haven't a ton of this show, either but enough to say I'd like to see more
Three's Company - I liked this enough to buy the first three seasons, it loses its charm oddly enough when the Chrissie character becomes a total airhead, which was supposedly why the show became a hit(?), early on she was not the brightest but she was also far from stupid, she was fairly normal, it also benefits from a very likable cast

All of this, yes. I love love love Chrissie the first two - three seasons. Her dumbness really kicked in when Mr. Furley came onto the scene. He was awful. I just couldn't stand Don Knotts' mugging. Even as a kid, it got on my nerves. And Jack was the most appealing early on as well. Then John Ritter got a little too cutesy. The first couple of seasons it had a carry over factor of the 70s hippie feel to it. I liked that. And then in the 80s, it was just so very 80s and not in a good way. The 80s had a certain garishness that was hard to take. And, yes, very likeable cast. Janet was the one who stayed the most true to original character of all of them. yes, Edith Bunker was almost too nice to be believable. But only almost. I was willing to go along with it because it balanced things out. Mike is the only character I don't like and I REALLY don't like him. I do like Gloria, who is more even tempered and reasonable than her super obnoxious husband. I need to maybe watch some Happy Days. I am not all that familiar with the show. I liked Joanie, the little sister! She was funny.

'Barney Miller,' and I'll also give a shout out to 'WKRP in Cincinnati' although only the first two seasons aired in the 70's, I believe.
Carol Burnett's show, brilliant as it was, was a sketch program. Not really a "sit com."

MASH is my favourite American sitcom, at any rate the first three seasons.

Soap (1977_1981) is a riot, written by the same woman who would later create The Golden Girls.
From that list though, it would be hard to top MTM or All in the Family.

It went from a show about the 50's to "The Fonzie Show". The haircuts went from 50's short to 70's fluff. The scripts went way downhill before the infamous Shark Jump and Ron Howard left. I loved the show in when I was growing up. Guess it's like thinking the first girl you boinked was hot then seeing her pic in the yearbook and thinking "meh".
